Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Angle, Side, Angle Constructions Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to construct a triangle using a protractor and straight edge. Most students should be able to construct a quadrilateral and pentagon using a protractor and straight edge. Some students should be able to construct a regular polygon using a protractor and straight edge. Keywords: Angle, Side, Angle, Protractors, Straight Edge, Construct Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap using the angle properties, angles about a point and equilateral triangle to calculate the sum of the three exterior angles. The class may need to work in pairs to attempt this. Have the solution presented on a mini-whiteboard for assessment and feedback. Development Discuss what is meant by the phrase, angle, side, angle. To identify such a construction we look for a length between two angles. Students need to perform the construction to an appropriate degree of accuracy. It is often nice to discuss and agree the level of accuracy required. Emphasise that sketches are drawn freehand and constructions are drawn with the appropriate equipment. To construct the triangle on slide 2 the base length of 5cm is drawn with the two angles constructed either side. These lengths are then extended until they intersect. This creates the triangle. Emphasise the need to use multiple scales on the protractor since students often construct 60 as 120. When constructing quadrilaterals or pentagons have the class consider them as multiple triangles joined together. Plenary The plenary is used to extend the learning of the class by having them consider the properties of a regular hexagon and measure angles from a slanted edge. This could be used as an opportunity for display work. Students may need to construct the polygon on a blank sheet rather than in their book. Have students check each others work based on the agreed upon levels of accuracy. Differentiation More able: Students could construct additional polygons. Less Able Students may need to be given lengths to the nearest cm and angles as multiples of 10. Resources: Mini-whiteboards Protractors, Pencils Card/A4 Paper
