Reading Strategies Metacognitive Journal #2

Strategy Predict: Make a smart guess about whats going to happen next Quotation A subdivision of Panopticon, she says. One that you really dont want watching you (Ruff 107). My Response The way the author ended the chapter with this makes me think that Jane will have some conflicts with this subdivision. Jane explains later on that Panopticon sees everything and hears everything. There are secret cameras hidden on paintings, even on money. Since Jane had a disturbing and regretful past, it might come back a haunt her. Panopticon already knows everything about her and they might bring up something that might not let Jane work for the organization or just give her a hard time. This wasnt the first time Valium was mentioned in the story. I never bothered searching up on it because I thought it was not important but Jane seems to talk about it frequently. I did my research and Valium is a drug used to treat anxiety disorders. I understand why Jane brings this up several times. She always seems like she is under stress and she does a lot of drugs. It makes sense that she turns to drugs when she is under pressure and to relieve herself. When I imagine this excerpt from the book, I think of a little office workplace. Dixon is kind of described as nerdy in the book, so I think this is where he spends most of his time working. This description also fits in with the position Jane is in during the present time. While she is explaining this to the doctor it seems like she was stuck in the same position as before. She was interrogated by Dixon and now the doctor. Dixon is questioning her about her past and the doctor is too. This could be one of the themes in the book. That history repeats itself, Jane made mistakes and now it has come back to bite her. She has always ended up being questioned because she keeps creating problems.

Clarify: Look closer when something is confusing

She said sure, so I got a car, some boxes, and a little extra Valium... (Ruff 133).

Visualize: Imagine a picture or movie in your mind as you read

Dixons office had a single overhead light fixture, like a search lamp mounted in the ceilingthe bulb was like a thousand watts or something, and it had been angled at the door instead of aimed straight down, Id have gone blind on the spot. A long folded table had been set up in the cone of the lamp light. The left side of the table was piled with paper, mostly oldfashioned computer

fanfold printout. The right was reserved for a sleek laptop, its screen flickering with a cascade of green figures, (Ruff 113). Make You know what Connections: cryogenics is? Wise Connect asked. Sure. Its where what youre they put you on ice until reading to doctors can invent a something cure for whatever killed else you. (Ruff 153).

The first thing I thought of when I read this was the TV show Futurama. The main character in the show was frozen in a cryogenics lab for 1000 years and had the live the rest of his life in the year 3000. But then I thought, he was accidently frozen and was alive when it happened so I cant really connect these two very well. Then, I remembered this story I heard about a while back. Ted Williams, from the Boston Red Sox. He died in 2002 and had his head frozen cryonically. I always thought of cryogenics as science-fiction but it is certainly real. I think the concept of cryogenics is very interesting. The fact that you die but still have a chance to come back. I would love to be frozen when I die but my mom would never let me.

Summarize: Retell what happened in the story so far

From page 74-162 Jane finds out that Julius Deeds was never a real criminal, but rather a petty one. Janes next assignment was Arlo Dexter who is a sociopath. Jane met Annie Charles who seems a bit off and is a part of the secret organization and her probate officer. Arlo Dexters next move was bombing an Elementary School resulting in the death of Annie. Jane was able to stop it but Annie died. Even though she got her probate officer killed, Jane finally became an official Bad Monkeys operative. Jane meets Mr. Dixon who is a part of Malfeasance which is a subdivision in the Bad Monkeys organization that investigates operatives. Jane must go through a background check with Mr. Dixon; who does not like Jane at all. Dixon is suspicious of Jane thinking she is a criminal. After cutting her off for 3 months, Bob True has an assignment for Jane in Las Vegas. Jane will be working with Robert Wise who is in Scary Clowns; a division in Las Vegas. Jane and Robert have to go to a Cryogenics lab for their operation and to find Jacob Carlton who is suspected of killing customers of the Ozymandias Corporation (cryogenics lab). The second part of the story ends with Jane accidently killing Carlton which Robert thinks otherwise
