3.0 BODY
3.1 Definition

3.1.1 Wikipedia (2000) : A blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a

web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of
commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or
video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.

"Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to

a blog.

3.1.2 Matisse Enzer (2007) : ‘A blog is basically a journal that is available

on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone
who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using
software that allows people with little or no technical background to update
and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in
chronological order with the most recent additions featured most
prominently.’

3.2 Reason of blogging

3.3 Types of blog

3.3.1 Personal Blogs

Wikipedia (2000), an ongoing diary or commentary by an individual, is the
traditional, most common blog. Personal bloggers usually take pride in
their blog posts, even if their blog is never read by anyone but them. A
type of personal blog is referred to as “microblogging,” which is extremely
detailed blogging as it seeks to capture a moment in time.

3.3.2 Corporate Blogs

Wikipedia (2000), a blog can be private, as in most cases, or it can be for
business purposes. Blogs, either used internally to enhance the

communication and culture in a corporation or externally for marketing,

branding, or public relations purpose are called corporate blogs.

3.3.3 Question Blogs
Wikipedia (2000), it is a type of blog that answer questions. Questions
can be submitted in the form of a submittal form, or through email or other
means such as telephone or VOIP. Qlogs can be used to display
shownotes from podcasts or the means of conveying information through
the internet.

3.4 Advantages of using a blog

3.4.1 Creation of community

Christopher Heng (2005), said that if you use a blogging software, your
visitors would be able to give their comments and interact with each other
under each article you write. For some people, this is a significant
advantage, since you can create a community of people around your site
who will revisit your site regularly for updates. This loyal following also
helps to break your site’s dependence on search engines to send traffic.

2.4.2 Therapeutic benefit
Wikipedia (2000), states that scientists have long known the therapeutic
benefits of writing about personal experiences. Blogs provide another
convenient avenue for writing about personal experiences. Research
shows that it improves memory and sleep, boosts immune cell activity and
reduces viral load in AIDS patients and even speeds healing after surgery.

2.4.3 Cost-Effective Site Creation

Unknown (2002), we do not need to worry about site creation costs and
maintenance fees when using free blog sites. This Internet service offers
fully-functional site development tools to create professional-looking
websites complete with features and applications. You do not have to hire
professional Web developer to do the job for you since free blog sites can
help you make one up with just a few clicks of a mouse button.

3.5 Disadvantages of using a blog

3.5.1 Defamation or liability

Wikipedia (2000), in January 2007, two prominent Malaysian bloggers,
Jeff Ooi and Ahiruddin Attan were sued by pro-government newspaper,
The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad, Kalimullah bin
Masheerul Hassan, Hishamuddin bin Aun and Brenden John a/l John
Pereira over an alleged defamation. The plaintiff was supported by the
Malaysian government. Following the suit, the Malaysian government
proposed to “register” all bloggers in Malaysia in order to better control
parties against their interest.

3.5.2 Issue of personal blogging and freedom of expression vs.
employer rights and responsibilities.
Wikipedia (2000), in fall 2004, Delta Air Lines fired flight attendant Ellen
Simonetti because she posted photographs of herself in uniform on an
employ deemed inappropriate. Simonetti took legal action against the
airline for “wrongful termination, defamation of character and lost future
wages. The suit was postponed while delta was in bankruptcy proceeding.

3.5.3 Blogging can sometimes have unforseen consequences in

politically sensitive areas.
Wikipedia (2000), In Singapore, two ethnic Chinese were imprisoned
under the country’s anti sedition-law for posting anti-Muslim remarks in
their blogs.

4.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, blogging assist people in many ways from personal to business
purpose. We can choose the types of blog that we want to be actively involve
with and each type of blog will brings different experience to the reader and also
to the bloger himself. By blogging, it helps in encouraging the blogger’s
independence and confidence toward discussing and pointing out the ideas,
advices, and giving opinion in bigger issues while taking care of the sensitivity of
others. However, there still a conflict arose from the misused of a blog.
Therefore, each blogger need to understand the appropriate attitude they must
perform in order to protecting the right of freedom in blogging.
