1.2 Meaning of Blog
A blog, short for “weblog,” is an online
platform or website where an individual or a
group of people regularly share their
thoughts, opinions, experiences, or
information on a specific topic. It serves as a
digital journal or diary where bloggers can
express themselves and engage with their
audience through written content, images,
videos, and other media.

Blogs can cover a wide range of subjects, such

as personal experiences, hobbies, travel,
fashion, technology, health, politics, or any
other topic of interest. They often offer a
chronological display of entries, with the most
recent posts appearing at the top.
1.3 History of blogs
The history of blogs dates back to the late 1990s when the
term “weblog” was first coined by Jorn Barger in 1997.
However, it wasn’t until 1999 that the term was shortened
to “blog” by Peter Merholz, which eventually became the
commonly used term.

In the early days, blogs were primarily personal online

diaries or journals where individuals shared their thoughts,
experiences, and links to interesting websites. They were
often manually updated using HTML coding. However, in
1999, the platform Blogger (formerly known as Pyra Labs)
was launched, which made it easier for users to create and
update their blogs without needing technical skills.

The early 2000s saw a significant growth in blogging as

more people embraced the medium. Blogging platforms
like WordPress and Movable Type emerged, offering more
features and customization options. This led to an
explosion of personal blogs, covering a wide range of
topics and interests.
Around the mid-2000s, blogging began to shift from
personal diaries to more professional and niche-focused
content. Bloggers started to gain influence and credibility
in specific industries, and businesses began recognizing the
marketing potential of blogs. Many companies started
utilizing blogs as a means to engage with their audience,
share news, and promote their products or services.

The rise of social media platforms In the late 2000s and

early 2010s had an impact on blogging. Microblogging
platforms like Twitter allowed users to share shorter
updates, while platforms like Facebook and Instagram
provided alternative ways to share content. Despite this,
blogging continued to evolve and adapt.
