Brianna 615 The Power Struggle of Rabbits In literature class the 6th graders are reading a book called

Watership Down about rabbits. There are 11 rabbits who leave a warren because of a rabbit named Fiver who saw great danger coming upon their warren. Two rabbits named Bigwig and Hazel both do great deeds in times of trouble and both of them seem to be the leader. Is Bigwig the better leader.. or is Hazel? All of the rabbits would benefit from Hazel being the leader. To begin with, Hazel can encourage a large group of rabbits to do many things. For example, he led the rabbits from the original warren to Watership Down, the new warren. Secondly, Hazel knows the strengths of the other rabbits that he led, like how he knows that Dandelion is a good storyteller. (Hazel used this to calm rabbits down several times.) Lastly, Hazel knows what each and every rabbit needs. So he knows that Pipkin and Fiver couldnt swim across the river Enborne and he had Bigwig and Silver push them across on a raft. Therefore, Hazel knows how to take care of his rabbits, lead them, and use them to make the whole group strong. Hazel could be a really good leader, but on the other hand, Bigwig could lead the rabbits too. In contrast to Hazel, Bigwig is able to fight things that threaten the group. There was a rabbit from Efrafa whose name was Blackavar and Bigwig fought Blackavars guard to free him. Also, Bigwig is very brave. He was the only rabbit who went into Efrafa. Efrafa is an evil place where you are a prisoner and have to eat at a certain time and you dont have any rights of your own. Finally, Bigwig is able to take risks, and an

example of this is when he ran at a fox so it wouldnt attack the rabbits. So, this shows that Bigwig is able to protect the rabbits, have courage to face tough problems, and would risk his life to protect the group. In my opinion, Bigwig is the better leader. He can protect the group, have the courage to face tough problems, and is able to risk his life for his warren. This shows that, Bigwig has great leadership qualities and that makes him the better rabbit to lead at Watership Down.
