How does Conflict Drive the Plot in Watership Down

Watership down was written by Richard Adams in the 1970s. It is about some rabbits

going on a journey to find a new Warren or home . The story began when Fiver, a small and

weak rabbit had a vision. Fiver was known for having visions about different things that will or

may happen in the future . The vision that he had was the warren that he lived in was being

destroyed by humans were most of the rabbits were killed or shot. After he had his vision he told

his brother Hazel about the vision. After a while Hazel believed Fiver and they tried to gather

everyone in the warren to leave. It didn’t work, the chief rabbit didn’t believe Fiver because he

didn’t understand how his vision could be real. There were some rabbits that did believe them

and they left the next night. Most of the rabbits were questioning whether Fivers visions were

correct, but they still continued to try and find a new warren on their way to find a new warren

they found a rabbit named Cowslip. Since the rabbits from Saddleford didn’t have a warren

Cowslip showed the rabbits to his Warren . When they went in all the rabbits were big and

strong. The rabbits there had a different belief compared to the rabbits from Saddleford. There Commented [1]: More information needed

was always food outside the Warren like carrot and lettuce and they accepted the food but in

retreat they traded a life of a rabbit to the humans who were giving the food. The rabbits from

Sandleford didn't agree with this idea so they wanted to leave.

When they were leaving the Warren a rabbit named strawberry came with them so they

left to find or build a new Warren. After a while they found a they found the place they wanted

to build their warren. Since does were known for digging the warren strawberry and some of the

other rabbits started to dig their warren. It took a while to dig the warren but, they eventually got

their new warren built, but they had a problem and it was that they didn’t have and any does.
They were trying to figure out what to do about the does problem then their heard something. It

was a bird that had its wing injured. Normally rabbits would stay away from other animals but

this time they helped him. The rabbits told the bird about their problem and he helped them by

trying to find a different warren with does. He found one call Efrafa. Once Efrafa was discovered

some of the rabbits went to Efrafa but they captured the rabbits that wanted to get the does. They

eventually escaped Efrafa. They then made a plan to help some does escape. Once they had a

plan they did it and it worked. The name of the leader of Efrafa was Woundwort. He wanted to

get revenge because the rabbits in the new warren were stealing his rabbits. Although he had

many does in his warren and it was overpopulated he still wanted revenge he grouped up all of

his strong rabbits and he laid siege on the new warren that that the rabbits had built. Hazel and

some other rabbits managed to escape the siege so that they can go to the to get the dog. They

went to the farm before the get some captured does but, it wasn’t very successful. When they

went the second tie the brought the dog from the farm to their warren to fight the other rabbits.

Wound wart wasn't’ afraid of the dog and he attacked it but he died. They then went and built a

new warren in between Efrafa and the watership down warren. Once everything was settled

Hazel was greeted by the black rabbit or the rabbit of death and after this Hazel died. After the

fight they all lived happily.

Since this book has a look of conflict in it you can see that the conflict drives the plot. It

can be proven because without the conflict nothing would have happened in the book. The

conflict is quite similar to a book that we read this year. It was river boy. Since river boy is

mostly about dealing with loss about loss and how to deal with it. Some of the conflict in

watership down had to deal with loss to. While the rabbits were on their journey they loss many Commented [2]: too or also

rabbits while doing it. In River boy it was the grandpa that died and he was a main character
throughout the book. In Watership Down Hazel was one of the main character and he took part

in almost every part of the book. Some could say that he was the most important charter. At the

end of the book he was created by the black rabbits which means he died. Most of his friends

including his brother had to deal with his loss just like how the granddaughter of the grandpa had

to in River boy. This book interesting and boring at the same time and I could really recommend

it to anyone but it wasn’t too bad.
