Q: Explain the reasons for the Battle of Trench?

Abu Sufiyan challenged the Muslims at Uhud to meet again after one year at Badr. When the time arrived, Muhammad prepared an army of 1500 fighters and camped at Badr. Abu Sufiyans courage failed him to face Gods messenger. Thus Holy Prophet stayed at Badr for 8 days awaiting a threatened encounter. Although no fighting occurred, the coastal tribes were impressed with the act of Muslims. This was a triumph for Muhammad which enraged the Quraish. Though the Muslims were defeated at Uhud, they regained their former position and prestige which threatened polytheism of Quraish. They found the growing power of the Muslims a threat to their social and religious position as well as their commercial prosperity. Hence they wanted to decide their fate for once and all. After Banu Nazir broke their treaty with Muslims, they were expelled from Medina. However, they carried their work by provoking other tribes to attack Medina. They visited Mecca and invited them to crush the Muslims. Similarly they visited other Bedouin tribes to from allegiance with Quraish and attack Medina simultaneously. Nevertheless, the loss of Muslims at Uhud encouraged the Quraish who were determined to crush the power of Muslims. They became more motivated and thus started preparations for an immediate assault on Medina.
