Project proposal

Mahdi Rahimi The project that I am doing is under the theme of Identity which is quite related to the metamorphosis theme in some ways, because however your body changes during your life your fingerprints stay the same and you cant do anything about it. I have come up with this idea when I was surfing on the internet to gather some information and ideas.

My ideas are: Make a sculpture: carve a fingerprint on plaster, out of wires. Do a painting: of a fingerprint, of a face. To do the paintings I decided to use my fingerprints to mark/draw them because its one of the artists techniques that I have looked at and to make the sculpture I decided to make a big piece of plaster and then draw my fingerprint on it and then carve into it. To get my fingerprint to the right size I use the photocopier. To do the wire sculpture I would just make a fingerprint out of wires.

I have looked at three artists so far: Banksy, Do Ho Suh and Gaudi and I will look at Marcus Harvey as well because I have heard that hes done some work with fingerprints. I have looked at Banksy because I like doing stencil and work with cards and also I like sculptures and 3D thats why I have looked at Do Ho Suh and Gaudi. The sculpture that I am aiming to do is a bit similar to Gaudis work in some ways because its going to have rounded edges and different lines will be used. Banksys works were so detailed and I tried to do my stencil as much details as I could to have a successful outcome. I have looked at some stencil cut techniques and examples and also some sculpture made out of plaster and wires. To make the stencil I had to use a pencil, card, tracing paper and a knife to cut the pieces out and to do the sculpture I will need plaster a pencil and some carving tools and then after finishing use some paints or inks. I will make a sculpture because I like doing 3D stuff and I did stencils because I like working with cards. I will look at some sculpture painting because I need to paint it at the end to make the carving stand out because there is a little idea in my head about how to paint my sculpture and it is paint the sculpture in black and then fill in the fingerprint holes with some white stuff to stand out. Also I need to look at some carving skills to get some idea of how to carve properly. I am expecting to have a nice sculpture with my fingerprint carved on it which is quite appropriate to go on the show in the exhibition room.
