What is a topographic map?


A map that shows surface features of an area

Parts of a topographic maps


Shows elevation, relief and slope Contour lines: connect points of equal elevation Contour interval: show the change in contour line to contour line. Always the same Index contours: every 5th contour line is thincker. Labeled and round units

Reading topographic maps


Scale- usually large scale maps. - A close up view of part of the land Symbols map makers us a variety of symbols to represent features of the land

Interpreting contour lines


Close lines mean steep hill Further lines means flatter area A loop with no other lines in it is a hilltop A loop with dashed lines is hollow ground
