use the word if or whether (which is the equivalent to if);
change the word order.
E.g. “Are you enjoying yourself?”, Susan asked Patty. (Verb + subject + object)
Susan wanted to know if (=whether) Patty (she) was enjoying herself. (subject + verb + object)
“WH” QUESTIONS:
change the word order.
E.g. “Why are you so late?”, she asked Michael. (QW + verb + subject + time expression)
She asked Michael why he was so late. ( QW + subject + verb + time expression)
“POLITE” QUESTIONS:
use the structure of the reported questions, but maintain the verb tense used in the question:
Can you tell me/ Do you know/ Do you remember/ Do you have any idea +
question word or if/whether (for yes/no answers) + subject + verb + object.
E.g. “Why do people turn into shopaholics?”(QW + aux. verb + subject + main verb + object)
