Determination of No.

of amino (NH2) and hydroxyl group Idea: For compounds containing amino group: For compounds containing hydroxyl group: Acetic anhydride can hydrolyze by water. If a certain weight of the unknown (WT) is refluxed with a mixture of acetic anhydride and pyriding (1:4) (is called as acetylating reagent) for 1 hr. (to ensure and then titrate against NaOH (IN) in the prescence of Ph.Ph. as an indicator), the consumed volume of NaCH will be equivalent to the unreacted acetic anhydride. If the same volume of acetylating mixture is exposed to the same conditions (reflux for 1hr) and then water added followed by titration against NaOH (1N), the consumed volume of NaOH will be equivalent to the total of acetic anhydride. Estimation of formaldehyde pority in formaline Idea: Formaldehyde is gas and its solution in water is called formalin. If we use a certain volume of I 2 (50ml) to oxidize the formaldehyde in certain weight of formalin. Then we can determine the unreacted I 2 by titration against sodium thiosulphate and hence we can know the reacted of I2.

Calculation: Procedures:
1)

Weight 2.5 gm of formaline and dissolve it in 250ml dist water (in measuring flask 250ml).

2)

Pipette out 25ml of formaline solution (step1) into a conical flask, add into it 50ml iodine solution (0.1N).

3)

Add NaOH solution with stirring till the liquid becomes pale yellow in coloun.

4)

Allow the solution to stand (in dark) with shaking it at room temperature for about 20 minutes.

5)

Acidify with HCL (using ltmus paper as an indicator) and titrate against sedium thiosulfate 0.1N in the prescence of starch as indication.
