2. Test procedure

(1) Connect the test optical line according to the above diagram. Optical attenuator 1 can employ a nonadjustable 10 dB fixed optical attenuator. Ensure the input power at IN end of SDH tester within the permitted range. (2) The tester sets the output optical signal rate according to the access rate of the OTU to be tested. The PRBS can be chosen as 23. Adjust the adjustable optical attenuator 2 to ensure that there is no bit error found on the tester. (3) Continuously adjust the adjustable optical attenuator 2 and increase the attenuation to set the bit error rate at BER =10-7, and measure the input optical power of this moment at the client side of the OTU. (4) With the method stated in Step 3, measure separately the input optical power at the client side during BER =10-8, BER =10-9 and BER =10-10. Because the logarithm of the BER value is in direct proportion with the input power, one can use these values to calculate the input power during BER =10-12 by means of the coordinate, and this value is the minimum receiver sensitivity at the client side of the OTU. This method is right the extrapolation. (5) Set the adjustable optical attenuator 2 to a proper fixed attenuation value, and make the input power at the IN end of the SDH tester within the permitted range of the meter. (6) Adjust the variable optical attenuator 3 to achieve no bit error in the tester. (7) Continuously to adjust the adjustable optical attenuator 3, and employ the extrapolation stated in (3) and (4) to measure the Min. Receiver sensitivity at the DWDM side of the optical port IN of the OTU.

5. Test procedure

(1) Connect the optical line according to the diagram above, and turn on the optical power meter. (2) Set SDH tester to the same rate as that of the accessed OTU that is to be tested, and adjust the optical attenuator to make the receiving optical power of the OTU proper. (3) After the reading of the optical power meter is stable, the optical power tested at OUT port of the OTU is the launched optical power of the DWDM side, and that tested at TX port is the launched optical power of the client side.

Multi-wavelength Meter

Configuration diagram for test on wavelength (frequency) and offset

8. Test procedure

(1) Start the multi-wavelength meter and wait till the preheating is over. (2) Connect the test configuration according to the above diagram. (3) Set SDH tester to the same rate as that of the accessed OTU that is to be tested; adjust the optical attenuator to make the receiving optical power of the OTU proper. (4) Set the multi-wavelength meter to the correct test mode, and press AUTO key to start the automatic test. (5) Read the wavelength value from the multi-wavelength meter, and record the test result.
9. Note

The central wavelength should be tested with the multiwavelength meter. If it is unavailable, the test can be fulfilled with an optical spectrum analyzer, but it should be calibrated before the test. The HP86145 optical spectrum analyzer is recommended.

11. Test procedure

(1) Connect the test configuration according to the above diagram. (2) First, set SDH tester as the rate of the board to be tested. Second, connect the attenuator and ensure the receiving optical power of the board to be tested be within the permissible range. (3) Start the optical spectrum analyzer, and set it to the DFB test mode. (4) Press the AUTO button of the optical spectrum analyzer to start the automatic test. (5) Get the reading from the optical spectrum analyzer. The value tested from TX optical port of the wavelength conversion board is the one of the client side; and the result tested from OUT port of the OTU is the one of DWDM side.
12. Note

The HP86145 optical spectrum analyzer is recommended, and the MS9710B and the MS9710C can also do. This test method is applicable to the transceivingintegrated wavelength conversion board. Refer to the OptiX BWS 320G acceptance manual for the test on the wavelength conversion board of separate transmission and receiving.

14. Test procedure

(1) The input signal of the optical amplifying board comes from the multiplexer unit. Connect the test configuration according to the above diagram. (2) Adjust the tunable attenuator, to make the input power of the optical amplifying unit to be tested within its permissible input range. Employ the optical spectrum analyzer to measure the optical signal waveform and power at the input end of the amplifier, and save the result in Channel B of the optical spectrum analyzer. (3) Employ the optical spectrum analyzer again to measure the optical signal waveform and power at the output end of the amplifier. And save the result in Channel A. (4) Set the display mode of the optical spectrum analyzer as A-B mode. Read the results of A-B, which are just the gains of each channel and the optical amplifier.
15. Note

When the gains of the optical amplifier are measured, the optical spectrum analyzer should be applied. The HP86145 or the MS9710B is recommended. The ASE noise will be significant after the amplification, when the input of amplifier is small signal. Thus, the significant ASE noise will induce relatively significant error when using the optical power meter to fulfill the gain test.
