Oil Sampling Information

These instructions provide information that will enhance the results of an oil sampling and analysis program for enclosed gear drives. They provide information relative to the oil sampling process. They are appropriate for a variety of drive types (parallel, right angle shaft, concentric, shaft mounted).

INTRODUCTION The condition of the oil provides a good indication of how well the gear drive is maintained. Poor lubrication is the leading root cause of gear drive problems. Oil sampling and analysis is a common preventive maintenance technique. It can reduce oil consumption by identifying optimal change intervals based on the specific application requirements. It can also be used to detect early signs of component wear and thereby prevent secondary damage that could occur if no corrective action were taken. The means by which the oil is sampled is key to obtaining a representative sample. In order to perform any trend analysis based on the oil analysis, the method of oil sampling must be consistent for all samples. These instructions provide a both a preferred and alternate method for drawing an oil sample. The preferred method is suitable for all gear drives with an inspection cover that can be easily accessed. The alternate method is appropriate gear drives without inspection covers or for applications where access to the inspection cover is excessively difficult. OIL SAMPLING METHODS - The gear drive should be operated for an extended period to bring the drive up to operating temperature and to distribute the contaminants evenly throughout the oil. Immediately after shutdown, a two (2) pint sample should be collected in a clean container using one of the following methods. Preferred method Remove the inspection cover. Using a clean ladle or collection device (i.e., suctions devise, baster) draw a sample from the center of the sump oil. Alternative method Remove the drain plug (or open drain valve). Let several quarts drain off. Then collect the sample. The initial oil that was drained off could be returned to the sump or discarded and replaced with fresh oil.
