WELCOME
I have been involved in Formula Student for a number of years now, and the levels of innovation demonstrated at the event never fail to amaze me. With over 2000 students from 34 countries competing in one class this year, it should be a very exciting event. Formula Student is a fantastic initiative which gives its entrants the freedom of design to test their ingenuity, whilst also providing practical experience of working to specific deadlines, budgets and regulations. Having worked my way up in Formula One from a machinist at the Williams team in the 1970s to Team Principal at the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team today, I have been involved in many different aspects of the sport, from being a mechanic to R&D and aerodynamics. I know that practical experience is invaluable to any engineer. Whilst Formula Student can provide a grounding in motorsport, with many of our engineers at MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS having taken part during their university days, it also provides the foundations for all forms of engineering if students wish to take their career in a different direction. I have no doubt that the skills learnt by participating in Formula Student will help towards the achievement of future success. Good luck to all of this years entrants and I look forward to meeting many of you at the event. ROSS BRAWN OBE TEAM PRINCIPAL - MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS FORMULA ONE TEAM FORMULA STUDENT PATRON
Welcome to Formula Student 2012. We were once again over subscribed, however we are delighted to have 132 teams from 37 countries participating at the 2012 event. This year there are vehicles with alternative powertrains including hybrids, electric vehicles and alternative fuels. We are especially pleased to have new teams from counties such as Pakistan, South Africa, Norway and Egypt. This year, for the first time, all teams with running cars will compete in a single class. The regulations for electric vehicles have been aligned with the FS Germany electric rules to make it easier for teams to compete in both competitions. The cost and sustainability events have also been merged and the fuel economy event is being judged on the CO2 produced. I would like to say a special thank you to our 2012 Partners; Airbus, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes AMG HighPerformancePowertrains, National Instruments and Shell we are extremely grateful for their support. Good luck to all teams attending the event and I look forward to seeing you at Silverstone Circuit! JON HILTON FORMULA STUDENT CHAIRMAN
INTRODUCTION
The largest student motorsport event in the world. Formula Student challenges university students from around the world to design and build a single-seat racing car, which is then put to the test at the famous Silverstone Circuit. Students work together on the car, developing their creativity, technical abilities, teamwork and communication skills, as well as learning how to deliver projects to budget and deadlines. The competition offers teams the opportunity to undertake real-life challenges and logistics, and develop the skills theyll need when they go on to work in industry. Run by the Institution, since Formula Student was inaugurated in 1998 tens of thousands have come through the competition, with graduates now featuring in every Formula One team. Its key aims are to inspire the next generation about the possibilities of engineering and address the skills shortage in engineering. The brief: Teams are to assume that a manufacturing firm has engaged them to develop a production prototype for a single-seat race car for autocross or sprint racing. The target customer for the final product is a non-professional racer, with high standards for performance and value for money. How it works: At the beginning of each academic year, university teams start to design their cars. Although they must work to defined safety standards, there are few restrictions on the overall design, thus encouraging innovation. As the year goes on, all the elements of the project must combine and teams have to make important real-life choices about design, cost and materials. The conclusion of the years work is in Julys competition at Silverstone. Teams of judges, including representatives from across industry sectors, scrutinise all elements of the cars, as well as cost, fuel economy and design, even the viability of the marketing plan. Scoring information is on page 6. This year, for the first time, cars running on alternative fuels will compete as part of the main field. Check what fuels the cars are using in the team list, starting page 18. Formula Student is: A high-performance engineering project Viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace The kite-mark for real-world engineering experience

CASE STUDIES
Andrew Shovlin Chief Race Engineer, Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team I took part in the first Formula Student back in 1998, as part of the University of Leeds team. Back then there werent many teams but the experience taught me a huge amount. The teams that came over from the US where FSAE events had been Andrew Shovlin(r) with Nico going for some time offered a real learning experience in Rosberg(c) preparing for the terms of how advanced they were. Their cars were finished to Montreal Grand Prix an incredibly high standard and the teams were so much more organised and better funded than the UK entries at that time. The performance of our car was pretty good, not as fast as the American teams but quite respectable. Unfortunately we had a few reliability issues that affected our overall position, some of which were selfinflicted... However, it was a useful experience for the Leeds University team and they went on to finish 30th in the 1998 FSAE competition in America. I finished my PhD that year and got a job with British American Racing (BAR) straight afterwards. I actually had my interview during Formula Student they were based just up the road in Brackley, so I popped out for a few hours on the Friday and headed up there. It was useful to have something to talk about and I actually spent most of the interview talking about Formula Student and some of the design and engineering challenges we had faced developing the car. After a few years doing vehicle modelling at BAR, I became a performance engineer in 2001, doing a lot of data analysis and simulation work. In 2004 I became race engineer on Jenson Buttons car, and worked with him until 2009. I then became Michael Schumachers race engineer in 2010, and since 2011 Ive been Chief Race Engineer at Mercedes. FS helped me a great deal: I learned an awful lot which was enormously useful during the early stages of my career. The way Formula Student is structured means you get a very good insight into the design lifecycle of a racing car. You are forced to provide all the analysis that backs up your decisions. That has helped make it something that is hugely valued within the industry. When I took part 15 years ago not many people knew what it was; now everybody in the industry does. James Painter Engineering Lead Vehicle Integration, Bloodhound SSC I took part in Formula Student as part of Bath Universitys BURT02 team in 2001 and 2002. For the first year we took part in the design category (then called Class 3), where we won with a perfect score. In 2002 we took part in the full event, and came 11th. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we achieved a tremendous amount with a small team of eight great people. The competition taught me a lot. The technical skills were obviously important, but its the things you cant pick up in a lecture theatre teamwork, the importance of effective communication and developing relationships with suppliers that proved just as useful when I was starting out on a career. After a few years in the defence industry working on jet engines I moved into motorsport and worked on a number of sportscar projects, including a 2 litre LMP3 car and a diesel Le Mans Sportscar Programme. I also worked on the development of exhaust energy recovery systems (EERS) for the automotive industry, designing turbochargers and turbogenerators. Two and a half years ago I began working on the BLOODHOUND Land Speed Record project. Im now responsible for leading the integration of all the components inside the car, not easy when they include a Cosworth Formula One engine, an EJ200 jet engine and a hybrid rocket! The role is very broad, in the same week I can find myself working on the design for a Formula one engine intake, a 500litre jet fuel tank and a gearbox for the rocket pump. BLOODHOUND is breaking all sorts of new frontiers designing a car that is capable of accelerating to 1000mph and stopping again safely presents many unusual challenges! Hear James talk about his work at the FS Business Networking Day in the Pavilion on Friday 13 July. Hell be on from 10.30, along with four other speakers, and while youre there you can check out our exhibition featuring stands from top automotive and manufacturing companies.

Rennteam Uni Stuttgart began in 2005 and is proud to present its 7th car in 2012. Most of the active team members spend almost all their time in building and testing the car to prepare for competitions. This years concept is a lightweight 10 wheeled car with a powerful 4 Cylinder Honda engine. The Rennteam is known for its very special and lightweight uprights, like one can see on this years car. Of course highlights like Hybrid rims and a combined oiltank and oilcooler dont miss. Having been quite successful last year in Silverstone, the team is very ambitious to achieve the same goal.

In October 2011 a team of 32 young and motivated students started to develop the 9th car of the TUfast Racing Team. And after a lot of work we were proud to roll the nb012 out of our shop in May 2012. In addition to a well designed car, last years season showed that a lot of car concepts can do well at a FSAE competition, as long as they are easily maintainable, lightweight and reliable. So the challenge of 2012 was to build a well engineered car and reliable car. Regarding that we came up with some good ideas for interesting parts for the nb012 and we are looking forward to Formula Student 2012. So now, we are excited to compete with all the other teams and get to know if we did a good job. And after a hard day full of work, we would be happy to chat with some of you guys about our favourite topic and having a good time. Just come over and visit us.

The team has a well-defined structure including a core managerial team overseeing all aspects of the car. The broad knowledge and experience of its 30 team members makes UH Racing a strong contender and one to watch this year. Drawing upon a wealth of existing Formula Student knowledge the team has focused its attention on data driven designs. Strict performance targets were identified for each vehicle subsystem and every design has been reviewed with respect to the original design criteria. This years strategy continues to develop statics but focus heavily on the overall dynamics of the team in order to operate efficiently and realise our full potential. Winning is the only thing that matters, everything else is a consequence of that.

TTUG Racing is a team that is rich in tradition. For almost a decade, there is a high fluctuation of volunteering students but the spirit and passion within the team stayed the same ever since. Every year, the main objective is to find the right balance between power and weight. In recent years, we used an engine that was amongst the most powerful on the track. This year, we made a turn regarding this concept. The focus is now on lightweight and agility rather than merely power. The chassis has become slimmer, the tyres smaller and we shortened the tread as well as the wheelbase. And we even went one step further: we switched the engine from a heavy 4-cylinder to a singlecylinder KTM. As we consider ourselves to be a students version of Formula One, we go along with the downsizing trend of our big brother. As a result of our changes, we estimate a much better fuel consumption and more agility. These improvements will provide the driver with enough confidence to stick it into the bends and prove our point.

This year Team HARE has embarked on the largest redevelopment program in the teams 11-year history. The team has moved from a four cylinder Honda CBR 600 to a KTM single cylinder engine. With this move the team has been able to redevelop all the major components of the vehicle to dramatically reduce the overall mass, however, reliability has not been compromised with the use of extensive test work coupled with FEA optimisation. Even with this extensive redevelopment program the team has met the manufacturing schedule which has enabled extensive test work to be completed to optimise the vehicle. The teams aim for this year has been to develop the overall project to maximise the potential points on offer for each competition. The team believes that using this strategy will result in Team HAREs most successful year to date.

The team consists of 10 MEng students, allocated 16 weeks to take the LR12 car from concept to final build. The focus this year has been on a lightweight, easy to manufacture design ensuring ample time for testing and tuning. This is Lancasters 13th year of entering FS, and the 5th consecutive year of using the Lancaster Links suspension. This alternative take on wishbone design minimises the effects of squat and dive, maintains optimum camber through the corners, and has been customised for easy fabrication and assembly on the LR12 car. The relatively small team size has provided the opportunity for every member to be involved in every aspect of the car, creating a truly multidisciplinary environment that has broadened every members skillset. Regular progress updates from each member have kept the project on its tight schedule, and involved the sponsors and supporters in every step of the process. Based on a chassis designed by a team member as his 3rd year project, every component of the LR12 car has been designed under the ethos of continual improvement; making the best use of materials, CAD techniques and modern manufacture techniques.

HWR-03 is the teams third entry to the Silverstone competition. From the very start the project was organised and planned by introducing a new structure allowing the team to be more productive and efficient. This year the team has concentrated its efforts on reliability with the aim of completing all the dynamic events. The team has doubled in number from 12 to 25 students from Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Robotics and Cybertronics, and Mathematical physics. In order to reduce weight the team has utilised carbon fibre in key areas such as the firewall/seat, air intake, nose cone and electrics box. The suspension system has been completely redesigned to further improve the performance and handling characteristics whilst reducing the un-sprung mass by 20%. HW Racing would like to thank the Mechanical Engineering department at Heriot-Watt University, and all of our sponsors and partners, for providing facilities and support that make entering the competition possible.

University of Strathclyde, UK
This year, University of Strathclyde Motorsport enters its 12th car, USM12, to both the Silverstone and Hockenheim events. The team has built on the new multi-year group management structure implemented last year as plans continue to lay a strong base of knowledge and experience to secure the long term future of USM. The expansion into the Strathclyde Business School has also allowed the appointment of a Commercial Director for the first time in the teams history. USM12 has taken a more evolutionary approach as the basis for the design, with a number of significant improvements across the car. Following the engine upgrade last season the team aims to learn and build on the experience gained and hopes the continuity will give the team the opportunity to exploit more on track performance. The car features redesigned suspension geometry and packaging with a move to Hoosier tyres. The University of Strathclyde has continued to give their full backing to the unique challenge Formula Student offers. The university appreciates the great benefits available to the students involved with the project and has started to integrate Formula Student into the curriculum for senior years. The University of Strathclyde Motorsport would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to all team sponsors, partners and supporters. Without their help and encouragement the team would not be able to succeed in competing at Formula Student competitions year after year.

University of Manchester, UK
The University of Manchester enters this competition with a simple yet effective design strategy to follow on from lessons learned in 2010 and 2011. The small team of volunteers from aerospace, mechanical and electrical engineering backgrounds give up their extra curricular time to take part in the project, as it is not integrated into the course at the University of Manchester. A well packaged design along with mathematically backed strategic weight reduction has resulted in the lightest and smallest car to date. The team has considered cost on a larger scale than ever before, cutting down on composite manufacture and switching instead to lightweight aluminium folding. A laser cut tubular space frame provides the base for a modified Yamaha R6 engine incorporating high compression pistons, slipper clutch and intake designed using the Ricrado Wave engine simulation software. In the drivetrain, a Torsen University Special sits in a custom designed, lightweight Aluminium 7075 housing. The differential is mounted in 7075 laser cut plates which are then mounted to both the chassis and the engine for increased torsional rigidity.

University of Liverpool, UK
The University of Liverpool Motorsport team began in 2005 and is now entering its seventh year in the UK Formula Student competition. The team comprises 35 final year and penultimate year Mechanical and Product Design with Engineering MEng students. The teams strategy for the 2012 competitions is one of consistency with design of ULM007 focused on reliability, driveability, serviceability, weight reduction and low cost manufacture. An all new Unsprung Suspension system based on 13 rims features custom wheel centres, all aluminium stub axles with integrated tulip joint housing, ultra-stiff uprights and light weight AP Racing callipers. The combination of low profile tyres and custom wheel centres has resulted in significant reductions in compliance while keeping weight to a minimum. With focus on drive integration, the ULM007 chassis has an improved driver position, with adjustable pedal box and a student designed vacuum formed ABS seat. A revised bodywork methodology has resulted in a light weight shallow draw vacuum formed ABS panels design with significant cost and manufacture lead time gains over glass/carbon fibre equivalents. Finally, the team wishes to thank all of our sponsors this year, without them the construction of the car would not have been possible.

DART-Racing is now participating at the Formula Student UK for the fourth time. Over 35 highly motivated students from various fields of study are working on this years car, the eta2012. We set our focus on the electric powertrain with all its components, beginning with new cells up to the powertrain itself with keeping compromises to a minimum. We choose new materials to maintain our dedication to sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint, so we are able to stay focused on our concept without neglecting the static disciplines. As in previous years, DART-Racing stands for innovative and progressive design: developing a new undertray with a rear diffuser we open the aerodynamic chapter at DART-Racing. Through simulation and validation drives we are able to improve our cars performance with least possible weight gain. DART-Racing is looking forward to an interesting and hopefully successful Formula Student UK competition. Also we would like to thank all sponsors and supporters who make the participation in Formula Student Events even possible.

Loughborough University, UK
LUMotorsport is a volunteer organisation representing Loughborough University, the UKs top university for sports and engineering. In 2012 LUMotorsport consists of 8 senior team members responsible for all aspects of the car including manufacturing, chassis, suspension, electronics and engine technology. Supporting them this year are 20 fresher team members and 7 members currently on industrial placement. LFS12 is designed both by the team and by students in academic modules. This year, the car features a radical design, a cast aluminium modular rear frame, which is 22% lighter than the steel space frame of 2011. This frame mounts the engine and the rear suspension and allows for the engine to be accessed in a matter of minutes for examination. The front of the car consists of a redesigned steel space frame with carbon fibre body panels, the design focusing on driver ergonomics for the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male. The car comes equipped with a modular electronics system featuring advanced data logging, traction control and launch control with a pneumatic shifter and clutch. LUMotosport is contesting in 3 events in 2012: FSUK, FSAustria and FSGermany; the teams goal is to finish in the top 10 of each event.

University of Sheffield, UK
Sheffield Formula Racing (SFR) is now in its third year. With help from the University of Sheffields Department of Mechanical Engineering and our partners including Stauff, National Instruments and Raysun Innovative Design, we are proud to present our third entry to Formula Student a completely new design which lifts little from last years car. SFR has a small but experienced team of 34 members, incorporating both new and experienced students. This year we aim to complete all dynamic events and to be competing at the very top in both the costing and business events. The car was designed with the driver at its heart, creating an environment which is comfortable and easy to use. The design allows for ease of adjustability and gives potential for further development. The design process has seen much improvement, with every system seamlessly integrated into the car as a whole. Highlights include a 40kg weight loss, front pull rod suspension and a cockpit suitable for the full range of drivers.

Brunel University, UK
Brunel Racing is having its hardest year for many years with minimal workshop access for the majority of the year and reduced support from the university. However the strength of the team has really shone through with dedicated team members and helpful sponsors really pulling the project back on track. This will be Brunel Racings 13th year of competing in Formula Student and the hopes are as high as ever. BR13 is the fourth iteration of the hybrid aluminum honeycomb monocoque/rear spaceframe chassis, which this year incorporates a closed back to further increase chassis stiffness. Brunel Racing would like to thank DNA Performance filters, Bosch, Forest Environmental and all our other sponsors without whom this year would really not have been possible.

University of Sussex, UK
Mobil 1 Team Sussex is looking to build upon the relative success of the 2011 team. For the first time in its (short) Formula Student history the team managed to compete in, and complete every event, and with that achieved a final position of 34th. 2012 Mobil 1 Team Sussex is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of 8 fourth year mechanical engineering students, 10 third year mechanical and automotive engineering students, 4 product designers, 2 business students and 2 media students. One of the objectives of the 2012 team was to widen the profile of Formula Student within the university; we are doing this by getting as many people from other disciplines involved as possible. The University of Sussex is a young, fresh and vibrant university with a growing reputation for excellence. One of the best ways to achieve a better finish this year is to reduce the total weight of the car. The teams objective this year is to finish in the top 20, an objective that is well within reach of this talented young team. Mobil 1 Team Sussex would like to thank all of its sponsors for their support, in particular, Mobil1, Palmer and Harvey and Ricardo UK.

ENIM, France
This year, our teams philosophy is summarized with the following words: simplicity, reliability, lightness. To respect these original goals, the Fearless car is based on several main design points and/or innovations: Switch from 4-cylinder engine (last years prototype) to singlecylinder engine. Switch from 13 rims (last years prototype) to 10 rims. Possible use of aluminum brake discs: 2012 innovation. Lowering of the center of gravitys position to maximize the grip. Car weight less than 200 kg (last years prototype: 236 kg).

2012 sees UBRacing make their 15th entry into Formula Student. This year the team aims to improve its overall result at FS compared to the previous year with most of 2011s team members returning to Silverstone. UBRacing are delighted to offer University of Birmingham students from all years the chance to take part in Formula Student and pride themselves in both the practical and professional development of team members. For 2012, the primary design objective was to design a car capable of being the most competitive UK entry and finishing top 10 overall at both Formula Student UK and Germany. For the first time, the team was able to make use of Tire Test Consortium data to drive specific suspension design decisions with the goal of getting the full performance potential from our chosen tyres. In conjunction with the support of the University of Birmingham, our continued partnership with Perkins has enabled the team to focus on the time management of the project and also preparation for static events; whilst our machining partners Yamazaki Mazak helped develop and produce the cars outboard assemblies.

TAU (Team Aberdeen University) Racing was established in 2007 by a group of undergraduate engineers of various disciplines at the University of Aberdeen. The teams goal each year is to design and build a single seat racing car to compete at Silverstone in the Formula Student competition. During TAU Racings first year of competition, we took the event by storm finishing 6th in a rain soaked endurance event and achieving an overall position of 24th out of 87 competing teams, while winning a number of awards, including Shell Most Fuel Efficient Class 1 Car. 2011 saw an ambitious redesign of the car in an attempt to gain more power and to finish higher in the dynamic events. This was achieved through introduction of a 4 cylinder fuel injected engine for the first time. TAU12 is an evolution of our 2011 car, with a projected weight saving of 15kg. We have a number of major developments this year, including a Drexler differential, drive shafts and dry sump. The team would like to thank all of our sponsors, without whom participation in this event would not be possible.

The FBR12 is Full Blue Racings 4th entry to the UK Formula Student competition. The car is a well balanced package aimed at providing the ideal driving experience for the amateur weekend racer, with complete setup freedom, good handling and throttle response together with excellent reliability. The team focused the design this year on a 20kg weight improvement from last year, achieved in part through the integration of a new carbon fibre composite rear plate. Setup adjustability has been the key focus of the vehicle dynamics on the FBR12 which features all new fully adjustable upright and hubs. The key target this year has been to complete the car ready for extensive testing from may onwards allowing the team to develop the car and drivers further in terms of both reliability and performance before the competition. The team now comprises of over 40 members from the engineering, maths, science and humanities faculties and would not be able to carry on with out the help of over 30 different sponsoring companies, with what we believe will be our finest production yet the FBR12.

Cardiff Racing returns to Silverstone with their newest creation, CR08. The car was designed primarily by fourth year engineering students, with enthusiastic volunteers ranging from first year undergraduates to postgraduates performing manufacturing, marketing and testing. Having broken the top twenty in 2011, despite issues throughout the weekend, confidence is high that this year can see the best ever result for the team. The full monocoque design of recent years has been replaced with a hybrid design; an aluminium honeycomb panel monocoque at the front, with a tubular steel space frame at the rear. This combines the excellent stiffness to weight ratio of the former, and the accessibility to key components allowed by the latter. Optimised intake and exhaust systems allow the Aprilia SXV 550 V-twin to provide 7% more power than previously achieved, whilst cutting weight from both systems. The power is then transmitted via a student designed aluminium spool that has proved faster than a traditional differential in back to back testing. New, lighter unsprung mass, updated suspension geometry and a solenoid quick shifter amongst new systems and components mean the team hope to be at the business end of the results come Sunday evening.

Phoenix Racing has taken a very ambitious design route to produce a light and technically advanced car. The design concepts that have been developed over the past year include: A hybrid chassis, consisting of carbon fibre tubes bonded to DMLS steel nodes with a rear aluminium sub frame A passive hydraulic suspension system that controls the different suspension modes A dual cylinder injection induction system, to improve the air fuel mixture, increasing engine efficiency A pneumatic, paddle operated gear shifting system to improve driver ergonomics and vehicle drivability This year, following the teams lightweight design ethos, a 2 cylinder Kawasaki GPZ engine is being used, saving 10kg in engine and ancillary weight. 10 wheels and a small wheelbase and track mean tight packaging and inherently smaller components, all of which produce a much lighter car. Phoenix Racing operates through a team of 24 final year students studying for a BEng in motorsport engineering. The team is divided into four sub teams which deal with four separate areas of the car, these areas being: Chassis, Engine, Dynamics and Unsprung Mass. Our main aim for this year is to win the efficiency event for the second year running.

The 2012 competition marks the 4th Class 1 entry for Team SURTES. This year, we focused on the refinement of the vehicle concept of our previous racing car through extensive research, design and testing. Hence, our main design objectives were on the optimisation of the technical solutions that we have developed over the last couple of years. We focused on improving the reliability and durability of all components without compromising their performance. Through extensive use of lightweight, high strength materials such as carbon fibre, aluminium and titanium alloys, our 2012 car weighs less than 200kg. The chassis is a new and improved iteration of the hybrid chassis solution developed last year. It comprises a carbon fibre monocoque front and a tubular steel space-frame rear with enhanced reliability, maintainability and accessibility. Power is provided by a 2009 Honda CBR600 RR engine, which has been chosen for its smooth wide-band torque characteristics. It is fitted with newly designed custom intake and exhaust systems, a bespoke carbon fibre dry sump lubrication system and a fully tuneable ViPEC V88 ECU. To understand and enhance the dynamic behaviour of our racing car, we have developed and fitted advanced electronic systems for data acquisition and telemetry.

TU Kaiserslautern, Germany
We, Kaiserslautern Racing Team KaRaT, are a small Formula Student team from Kaiserslautern that has been developing combustion cars for four years now. This season we build our first electric racer. As we only made it to Silverstone once, in our first season, we are glad to return this year. As we have no previous experience with electric drive trains, we want to start with a basic yet competitive concept. For this reason we chose to use two motors that drive the rear wheels. Were developing an electric differential but leave out torque vectoring for future seasons. Also all-wheel drive is a future topic for us. Building an electric race car comes at higher costs than building a combustion car. Thus we reorganized our non-technical department this year and extended our group dealing with sponsor acquisition and care team.

The Aston Formula Student team consists of 15 undergraduates from courses including product design, mechanical engineering and computer science. One of the key driving factors was a 20% weight reduction compared to the 2011 Aston Formula Student car. 2012 will be Astons 12th car featuring a number of changes from previous years, including a new and more reliable engine and an improved drivetrain. This years car has continued Astons tradition of using a fully carbon fibre monocoque both designed and manufactured inhouse by students. The car will be using a Honda CBR600RR engine which has a better power to weight ratio than previously used engines. 2012 has seen a major reshuffle by the way of project management with the team being run by undergraduates for the first time. This has involved five manager roles in Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Logistics and Static Events.

SU Racing has been attending Formula Student since 2004 and since then has improved with every car. SU Racing 2012 is a brand new team made up of students from all year groups within the university. The team is made up of students from many different subject areas within the university and is led by a 3rd year BEng Automotive Engineering, and two additional team captains heading up construction and body design. As the team is from various subjects we can draw on different areas of experiences and expertise which allows the team to focus on other areas of the competition. The teams new chassis design is build using a lightweight tubular steel space frame which is shorter and lighter than previous years. To further lighten the car we have designed a more aero dynamic fibre glass body and have also reverted back to a single cylinder engine to reduce weight but keep performance. The teams main focus is to address any reliability issues from previous cars and to achieve better results within the completion overall this is achieved with the continued sponsorship and support from DynoBike, Avon Tyres and AMAP.

Swansea University Race Engineering is a team of students from many disciplines working together to bring you S12. We look forward to presenting a radical new car concept at Silverstone this year, with our new turbocharged Yamaha Genesis twin cylinder engine and its all-important CVT transmission at its heart. The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) eliminates manual gear changes, allowing the driver to concentrate on the track, whilst reducing driver area clutter and weight. Extensive work with our new engine has allowed us to tune to compliment the CVT, with the turbocharger maximising power at specific points over the rpm range. Weight saving was a high priority during the design process; main areas for weight loss are the suspension, engine and drivetrain areas. Clever design has reduced weight whilst keeping cost impact at a minimum. Whilst S12 is radical, we have chosen to retain our proven Aluminium Honeycomb and steel space frame split chassis which improves rigidity whilst keeping weight at a minimum. Combine this with all new steering and suspension and S12 should outperform all our previous entries. We would like to thank all our sponsors and the university for helping us make S12 a reality.

The UPM Racing electric team was founded in 2010 with all the eight years of experience of our brother UPM Racing combustion team. Thus, a group of masters degree in hybrids and electric vehicles students decided to step in and accept the challenge of building an electric racing car, combining simplicity with performance. As a result, we have now a very practical car propelled by two rear electric motors which meets the most important pillars: reliability, performance and efficiency. Our car is the next step in evolution of racing cars, gathering all the qualities the racing world needs. Furthermore, it is not just a car, it is our philosophy, Evolution and Adaptation, those are the ideas people are excited about. That is why with pride, the UPM Racing electric team along with the Polytechnic University of Madrid present the UPM09e.

In 2012 UGRacing has benefited from increased stability due to the rollover of key team members and this has allowed good knowledge transfer to newer members who have contributed heavily to the car. UGR-12 is therefore an evolution of our previous car; 2011 gave the team a solid basis for the chassis and suspension and the 2012 iteration will feature improved designs for these, along with a complete redesign of the intake system which gave the team problems last year. The chassis and powertrain electronics have been simplified and better integrated with the car design with closer collaboration between these two sections of the team, aiming to improve reliability and better function of the overall package. Time has been invested to improve engine calibration to yield better fuel economy and more performance from the powertrain. Significant effort has been invested in design for reliability and assembly, some key parts were targeted for weight reduction. The team has concentrated heavily on manufacturing processes, suppliers and quality control, working tightly with our sponsors, aiming to take a big step forward in 2012.

University of Hull, UK
The Formula Student team at Hull University was founded in 2010 with the aim of entering the 2012 competition as a first year team. With very little automotive experience within the Department of Engineering, founding the team presented a unique set of challenges. Some of these included the logistics of getting organised and established at the university as well as obtaining support from local companies in order to obtain the required resources to build the car itself. The design of the car has been done entirely in the digital environment with a wooden prototype being built in December 2011 as proof of concept. This initial car has taught the team a huge amount that will be carried forward into the design of future cars at the university. However this inexperience has not stopped the team from innovating. Some of our most significant design features include our vacuum formed bodywork and the packaging of the rear of the car. A big thank you goes to all our sponsors and University staff in helping the team towards achieving its primary objective of getting to the competition and competing in all the events. The experience is invaluable to all involved.

As a fledgling team, sponsors, in particular ARM, have given us the boost we needed to enter Class 2 this year. We are a group of students with a passion for cars, racing and learning more about engineering and business; doing all of the work and preparation in our spare time. Our department and the team wanted to create a sustainable car; having a steel tube structure and using carbon fibre made the frame light to offset the weight of the batteries. The innovative aerodynamics package, in hub motors and suspension have created a car with a superb cornering ability.

The team of 30 engineers that form Team Bath Racing had a clear vision: design a super-light vehicle without compromising performance. With this in mind, a hybrid chassis has been designed with a carbon monocoque front and steel space frame rear, saving 8kg over a full space frame design. An impressive dry weight of only 147kg includes a full, un-sprung aerodynamic package capable of providing 700N of downforce at 55kmph. These features, coupled with an Aprilia RXV550 engine that delivers at least 80% of the peak torque across the usable speed range, ensure that the team objectives have been achieved.

The unconventional power train design is based on series hybrid: an electric power train powered by a rotary engine, Aixro XR50 4 Stroke Engine. The rotary engine drives a generator which spins two separate motors, controlling the speed of each rear axle through two custom gearboxes. Precise electric control of each axle results in better handling of the kart using torque vectoring, and also eliminates the need for a heavy differential. When the motors are not running at peak power the excess power from the engine is stored in a bank of ultracapacitors using a splitter. This power can then be fed back to the motors for a quick boost when required and aiding the engine to power the car, making it more efficient. This car could also work using hydrogen fuel and can be supplemented with an additional Kinetic Energy Recovery system, making it more sustainable.
