Iconostasis in the Church of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul

In Lozovik
The iconostasis in the wooden church of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Lozovik was created immediately after construction of the church in 18311832
and it is the work of the zograph Janja Moler, one of the most respected painters in the Principality of Serbia in the 1830s. Of the icons painted by Janja Moler until these days are preserved all the sovereign icons except the icon of the
church patrons, some icons from the row of the apostles and Mother of God
and St. John the Evangelist in the medallions next to the Crucifixion, while
the icons destroyed in the course of time were replaced with new icons dating
from the year 1931 when the church was restored. According to its architecture
and iconographic repertoire the iconostasis of the wooden church in Lozovik observed the practice common in the wider regions of the Balkans in the
beginning of the 19th century. So its iconographic program was created under
the influence of liturgy, symbolism and demands of donators. Thus created
the Lozovik iconostasis whose program scheme had complex dogmatic and
theological topics, functioned as open structure, which reflected happening
in the church interior, participated actively in the religious services taking
place there, had moralizing and didactic influence on the congregation but
also emphasized the identity of local community. The iconographic scheme
and visual poetics of the Lozovik iconostasis represent significant achievement of the painter Janja Moler. The retrospectivity, use of graphic templates
and older iconographic designs, ample use of gold and poetics of grandeur
that characterize the painting of the Lozovik iconostasis place it within general trends of zographic painting in the 19th century Balkans.
