Skills Lab Teaching Plan Week 5: Surgical Asepsis Objectives Upon completion of the lab, the student will

be able to o demonstrate an understanding of the principles of surgical asepsis; o demonstrate proper application of sterile gloves; o correctly apply a dry sterile dressing and wet to dry dressing while maintaining sterile technique; o correctly demonstrate the collection of specimens for wound cultures from a wound; o demonstrate proper technique of emptying drainage output from a wound using medical asepsis; o apply and remove a cap, mask, and protective eyewear correctly. Corresponding Chapter(s) Taylors Clinical Nursing Skills, Chapters 4 and 8 Lecture Outline o Review principles of surgical asepsis and sterile technique. o Discuss when a sterile field is contaminated. o Discuss proper donning of sterile gloves. o Review assessments of wounds. o Discuss different types of wound drainage systems. o Review proper technique in obtaining wound cultures and difference between aerobic and anaerobic. o Review application and use of protective war. SKILL Skill 4-2: Preparing a Sterile Field Skill 4-3: Donning and Removing Sterile Gloves Skill 8-7: Cleaning a Wound and Applying a Sterile Dressing TEACHING GUIDELINES Demonstrate skills of opening sterile packages, preparing a sterile drape, adding sterile supplies to a field, and pouring sterile solutions. Identify when and how sterile techniques and fields are contaminated. Glove dominant hand first. Identify ways gloves can be contaminated when applying. Assessment of a wound: o Types of drainage o Measuring of the wound o Assessment of the wound healing o Tunneling o Documentation of wounds Review wounds that require either a DSD or wet to dry dressing. Cleansing of the wound Packing a wound Collection of Cultures o Aerobic o Anaerobic Different types of wound drains (open-penrose, closed-J-Pratt, hemovac) Emptying and measuring of closed wound drainage Measurement of wound drainage systems
