Council President Gloria on Supreme Courts Equality Decisions
SAN DIEGO, CA (June 26, 2013) Council President Todd Gloria today released a statement about the U.S. Supreme Courts decisions on two cases related to marriage equality, the constitutionality of Proposition 8, a California state ballot measure approved by voters in 2008 that banned same sex marriages, and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). "Today is an especially proud day to be an American," said Council President Todd Gloria. "When civil rights are secured for more people, our country is stronger. I am grateful to every person who loved and lived proudly and who worked hard and sacrificed to make this justice a reality. "I will be asking the City Council's Rules Committee to examine all of the City's policies to make sure they are consistent with post-DOMA federal regulations and that our employees are afforded proper benefits." ###
