Lesson 9: Worksheet

Activity 1 Introduction Watch the video about baseball Activity 2 1. Read the text Baseball, America's National Pastime, and it's Heroes 2. First look at the title of the text and the illustration. What do you think are the main topics? 3. Next look at the guiding questions: Name three ways in which you can see that baseball is a popular sport in America? How do Americans feel about baseball? When do Americans consider baseball players to be heroes?

Read the text at least twice. Try to read it in one go the first time. If you come across words you don't know try to guess the meaning and if you can't guess, skip them and read on. There are a number of words in the text that have been underlined. You will find a translation of the underlined words at the bottom of the page. After reading the text you answer the questions (See text in source 1 lesson 9) Activity 3 1. Form pairs. 2. Go to the worksheet Word Web Heroes 3. Together you make a Word Web with the word heroesin the middle. Write down 9 things you associate with the word heroes in the stars 4. After you are done, you join another pair and together you compare what you have written down. What things are the same, what things differ? 5. In your group of four you write down what you consider to be important characteristics of heroes.

Activity 4 In the same groups of four: 1. You look at the following list of names 2. If there are names you don't know, look them up on the internet 3. Using your list of characteristics for heroes from the previous Activity, you write down which of these charcteristics apply to each person 4. You determine who you consider to be a hero/heroine and who you do not

Activity 5 1. From your list in Activity 4 you choose a person that you consider to be a hero that appeals to you 2. You perpare to present this hero to the class and to argue why you think he or she is heroic 3. You give a short presentation of about 2 minutes
