Step-by-step lesson suggestions Step 1: Introduction The teacher informs the class that the focus of this lesson will continue to be on heroes, hero characteristics and baseball, and that the class will work on the expanding of their vocabulary. Next they will again be looking at hero-characteristics which they will compare to the list they made in the previous lesson. Then they will read a text about a famous black baseball player, renowned for fighting racism in baseball and in society. Step 2: Vocabulary Students read a text, describing the characteristics of heroes. They focus on vocabulary by deriving the meaning of the words (printed in bold letters) from the description that follows. Each student is assigned a maximum of 4 words for which they must find the meaning, and subsequently explain to their group mates, using at least one example to illustrate the meaning of the word

Step 3: Discussing hero characteristics(10 minutes) Students discuss the characteristics of a hero and compare them to those that they formulated in the previous lesson. Step 3: Reading the text Jackie Robinson, Champion for Equal Rights in Sports and in Society

(15 minutes) Students guess the content of the text from the headline and the illustrations. Students read the text with the help of guiding questions. After reading the text, the students answer the questions

Step 4: Assessing Jackie Robinson: hero or not In groups of four students discuss what Jackie Robinson has done and achieved, and then decide whether or not they consider him a hero when take take into account their own list of herocharacteristics. Finally they tell the class about the outcome of their discussion .
