ABSTRACT

This paper is the result of research conducted in the laboratory of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering INSA of Rennes, in collaboration with the Technical Center Gevelot Extrusion of Laval and Polytechnic University of Bucharest in according of contracts signed between the institutions. The objective of this project is to make a study on reducing the risk of buckling in the elastic and the plastic yield for the components of forging presses. For proper functioning of the mills and the pieces of good quality, integrated design is almost as important as manufacturing process control. The industrial production of a piece of metallic materials remains to nowadays often condition by a forging operation: stamping, deep drawing, extrusion, machining. Indeed, these manufacturing processes have been and are still the most used, despite major industrial efforts to avoid resorting to a finishing stage. Some forging tools, such as supports, the punches or the ejectors present risk of buckling in service. The paper consists of two parts and appendices. The first part contains three chapters that synthesize the theory of elastic and plastic buckling and a summary of approximate methods for determining the critical buckling force. In the second part of the project is done a numerical simulation using finite element programs CAST3M and ABAQUS. This part is composed of two chapters. Finite element simulations are also powerful tools for identifying the conditions for the elastic buckling or plastic parts with complex geometry especially taking into account appropriate boundary conditions and loads. The fundamental criterion must not exceed the critical load obtained by numerical simulation. This work is the result of my own activity. I have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this work.
