Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

The University Club is making great strides with a small but enthusiastic membership roster, illustrating the wisdom behind Margaret Meads famous quote.
In May, 2011, the members of the University Club voted to offer for sale the Athletic Annex, which was failing to attract new users despite the closure of the Washington Avenue YMCA. In July, 2012, some 42 members of the University Club purchased $100,000 of bonds against the an-

ticipated sale of the Athletic Annex, generating revenue to bring our account current on property and school taxes which had gone unpaid for several years.

On Monday, June 17, 2013, the Club closed on the sale of the Athletic Annex, which will be converted into 4 market-rate apartments, to the design of local architect Daniel Sanders. On Monday, July 1, 2013 the club-issued bonds, which had a maturity date of September 1, 2014, will be repaid ahead of schedule.

With the bonds repaid, we must turn our attention to the clubhouse, which has experienced years of deferred maintenance related to the roof and HVAC system. We will soon be inviting our members and friends to take part in a bold and historic effort: the Raise the Roof Capital Campaign to repair and preserve our National Register-listed Clubhouse. In February, 2000, the Club commissioned a building systems survey which recommended replacement of all roofing materials, approximately 25,000 square feet on five different levels. For some 13 years, Club staff has engaged roofers to repeatedly locate the source of leaks and patch the old material. Water infiltration has caused damage to skylights, rendering some sleeping rooms unusable. Moisture damage to interior plaster and finishes has been repaired several times. Under the leadership of Club member James M. Davies, AIA, Deputy Commissioner Design and Construction for the New York State Office of General Services (retired), a small group of professionals has surveyed the roof. Based on their findings, the Club has requested proposals from roofing contractors with experience in jobs of similar scope. We cant afford to wait, though we must begin raising money now if we are to start work on the roof in the spring of 2014. The University Club Foundation, a 501c3 corporation established in 2009 to recognize and maintain the unique historic and architectural significance of the University Club building and property, will receive donations for the Raise the Roof Campaign, so contributions will be tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We are delighted that at least one Club member has agreed to make a significant leadership gift that will jump-start our fundraising. I hope that you will agree that it is the responsibility and the privilege of those who enjoy the Club to maintain and care for this building. In so doing, we will honor University Club members past and present as we strive to preserve our enduring legacy for the future. Colleen M. Ryan, President

The Hudson River School of landscape painting emerged, evolved and declined during a fifty-year period between 1825 and about 1875. Although not a formal school, it consisted of a group of closely connected artists who lived and worked in the Hudson Valley and who turned to the American landscape as a source of inspiration and subject matter. The Albany Institute of History & Arts Curator of History and Material Culture, Doug McCombs, Ph.D. will discuss the process of curating the exhibit titled The Making of the Hudson River School: More than the Eye Beholds at a luncheon at the Club on Wednesday, July 10 from 12:00 noon1:00 p.m. We hope you will join us for this unique inside look at what is involved in storing, conserving and selecting a collection of drawings, paintings and ephemera for an exhibit. Following the presentation, McCombs will lead a guided tour of the exhibit at the Albany Institute, across the street from the Club. The cost for the luncheon and lecture is $20, museum admission is $10 (AIHA members will be admitted to the museum for free new members may join on the spot and the admission fee will be waived).
