OBJECTIVES

Illustrate the structure of heart

STRUCTURE OF HEART : CROSS SECTION

the outermost layer layered

outer layer of the heart

thick layer of cardiac muscle give the heart its pumping ability

covers the inside cavities and all associated valves and muscles thin, fibrous layer (connective tissues + simple squamous epithelial tissues

STRUCTURE OF HEART
consist of cardiac muscle comprises of 4 chambers

thin walls
pump blood to right and left ventricles

thick walls
contract more strongly than atria ; pump blood to lungs and throughout the body

receive deoxygenated blood from body through vena cava ( anterior and posterior )

the deoxygenated blood is pumped into right ventricle

from right ventricle, it is pumped out to lungs through pulmonary artery

receive oxygenated blood from lung through pulmonary vein

from left atrium, the oxygenated blood is pumped into left ventricle
from left ventricle, it is pumped out throughout the body through aorta

VALVES
control the direction of blood ensure that blood flow in one direction on right side of heart has an atrioventricular valve tricuspid valve prevents blood from right ventricle flowing back into right atrium

VALVES
on left side of heart has an atrioventricular valve bicuspid valve prevents blood from left ventricle flowing back into left atrium semilunar valves : prevents blood from pulmonary artery and aorta flowing back into right and left ventricles
