New teachers, more tech for 2013-14

By Cole Hinz F.Y.I. Staff Writer
An expanded Title I program, new staff members, and more access to iPads are some of the changes students can expect to see at Frederick Area School this year. The school has updated its Title I program. Now all students K-6 are eligible for Title services. We chose to make this change because it gives us more flexibility and allows us to serve all of the students, Superintendent Bev Myer said. The Title I program aims to help economically disadvantaged students achieve academically. Previously, students had to meet eligibility criteria to take advantage of Title I services. However, because a sufficient percentage of students at Frederick Area meet economic eligibility requirements (measured by the perSee SCHOOL on page 3

Community Store faces possible closure

By Heidi Marttila-Losure F.Y.I. Editor
The Community Store in Frederick is in debt, and without a significant turnaround in the next few weeks, may face sale or closure as soon as September. The Community Store board has set a goal of raising $10,000 from the community by Sept. 1 to keep the store open.
See a list of ways you can help the store stay open on page 12.

The board met on July 18 to discuss the financial challenges facing the store. Delores Anderson, who does the accounting for the store, presented books that showed the store is about $7,000 in debt currently. First National

Bank will have to close out the stores accounts in September, the end of a quarter, if the store cannot find a way back into the black by then. The store also need funds to purchase a meat cooler to replace an old model that quit working recently. The basic problem is a lack of customers. Whos up for a neighborhood party?!

Frederick has some new residents, and we want to get to know them and welcome them to the community! Making connections with neighbors is good for all of us, whether weve lived here a week or a lifetime. Frederick Forward is sponsoring parties in various neighborhoods throughout the rest of the summer (hopefully all by Labor Day). Well bring Kubb and Mlkky, those fun lawn games that were introduced at Finn Fest, and help coordinate the event. Well make up a poster you can pass out in the neighborhood. Parties will be potluck. Well have a grand farewell-to-summer gathering of all neighborhoods before our September meeting: Monday, September 16. We need volunteers to host the parties in their yards, or to coordinate blocking off a block of a street for a party.

(Well work with you to get permission from the city.) Areas are: south of Main Street north of Main and west of Third Avenue north of Main and east of Third Avenue townships of: Palmyra, Osceola, Savo, Liberty, Allison, Frederick, Richland.
Please e-mail news@fredericksd.com if you are willing to host or help!

STORE: Reserve funds have been depleted

Continued from front page died or moved away. New residents in the community are not as apt to shop at the store, especially if they work in Aberdeen. This is not the first time the store has faced financial difficulty, but until the last few years, the store had savings to draw from in tough times. Those savings have been depleted. The community rallied to raise funds to save the roof in 2011, even going beyond the amount needed for the roof. That extra funding has also been used. Frederick isnt the only community to face the closure of its grocery store. Keeping a store open in a small town, especially one within easy driving distance of a regional center like Aberdeen, requires the support of the community. Some examples of that support in other communities is volunteer labor to man or clean the store, or a willingness to pay somewhat higher prices to keep the convenience of a store in town.
ry, ask Manager Jim Ulmer if he can order it for you. If you have other ideas on how to improve the store, e-mail news@fredericksd.com. Fill up your card. If you have a card for instore credit at the store, consider adding to it in the next few weeks. This will help with the stores immediate cash-flow concerns. Buy shares or make a donation to the store. The store is a community asset; we all benefit from its presence in Frederick, and wed all lose if it closes. Share purchases or donations are needed if the store is to stay open. Shares cost $1/share, with a minimum purchase of 25 shares. Shareholders have the right to vote at store meetings and to run for election to the store board. To buy shares or make a donation, send a check to First National Bank, PO Box 576, Frederick, SD 57441.

Moving forward on plan for foundation

Buddy Seiner from the South Dakota Community Foundation made a second trip to Frederick on July 15 to discuss the possibility of forming a community savings account with the SDCF. He attended Frederick Forwards annual Finn Fest sponsor recognition picnic. After explaining how the account would work, and that it would serve as a perpetual resource to fund community needs, Seiner and Frederick Forward President Heidi Marttila-Losure asked for a show of hands to see whether there was a consensus to move forward on forming a community savings account for the Frederick area. Most hands went up to show support. The next step is to find a group willing to serve on an initial planning committee. Since the group thought that having an account that served the same communities as the school district would be best, the next step is to recruit representatives from groups in Frederick, Barnard and Westport, such as the town councils, the school, community groups, etc. If you are interested in taking part or have suggestions or feedback, contact Heidi at news@fredericksd.com or at 290-3335.

Five ways you can help the Community Store

2 3

Get your groceries at the store. Consider committing to buy 10-15 items that you use regularly so the store has more consistent income: milk, eggs, butter, sugar, flour, cheese, or canned goods, for example. If items are a bit more expensive, spending more now is cheaper and more convenient long term to keep the store open for when you really need it. Check out advertised specials every two weeks: Often, Community Store prices are competitive with grocery stores in Aberdeen. The store accepts credit and debit cards for purchases. Purchase cards or gifts for special occasions. The Frederick store has a variety of items made by local crafters that would work well as gifts. Help the store serve you better. If you regularly purchase an item the store doesnt car-
