Mr. Jeff Larson, Room 232 jlarson@fvhs.com Course Expectations Introduction: Welcome to AP physics at Fountain Valley High School. This is a full-year college level class covering the topic of Classical Mechanics. It is designed for college-bound students and fulfills the laboratory science requirement for university admission; in addition it prepares the student for the AP examination. Material Requirements: In addition to the normal classroom materials (paper, pencil, etc.), students will need a non-graphing scientific calculator. Students will be graded on exams (100 points each), homework (5 points each), laboratory assignments (3 points per question), in class activities (usually 10 points each) and the final (10% of overall points). Students are encouraged to keep track of their grades and computer printouts of scores will be posted following each test for students to verify. There will be periodic extra credit opportunities throughout the year. Extra credit points earned are added to overall points. Late work will not be accepted unless the student has an excused absence. Students may have as many days as they are absent to make up missed work and tests at a time not during the normal school day. Student must be able to follow verbal and written laboratory instructions. All science safety rules as well and school rules as defined in the Parent Student Handbook must be adhered to. Academic Honesty: All work submitted for grades must be the original work of the student, unless specifically directed by the instructor. The use of any electronic device at any time during testing periods, with the single exception of a non-graphing scientific calculator is forbidden and will be considered cheating . Any such use will result in a referral to the Assistant Principal in charge of honor code violations. Use of Electronic Recording Devices: Students are required to comply with California Educational Code 51512, which states: "... the use by any person, including a pupil, of any electronic listening or recording device in any classroom of the elementary and secondary schools without the prior consent of the teacher and the principal of the school given to promote an educational purpose disrupts and impairs the teaching process and discipline in the elementary and secondary schools, and such use is prohibited..." Parent/Student Portal: I welcome parents interest and involvement in their students progress in physics. My grading system does not allow me to post grades on the parent/student portal, but I am happy to send you a current set of grades if you email me. Parents: please fill out the form below and have your student return it to me. My preferred method of contact is through e-mail, so please dont forget to fill that in.
