Summers End 2013 Volume 1 | Issue 3 | July- August

It was fun while it lasted but is summer really over? For

some of us, school has already started, the answer is yes. For others like me, who procrastinated summer work, summer reading and college essays, the answer is also yes. For the rest of us, the answer is no, summer lives on. Qualities summer are widely known for include free time, catching up on sleep, hobbies, or even studying (Im joking). No matter where you are in your summer, I hope Key Club was able to be a part of it! We have plenty of good memories to look over in this newsletter, and some things to look forward to!

Seal Shout-outs
Greetings seals! Has your summer treated you well? For me, I think this was by far the best summer I have ever experienced. It was a season full of opportunities to volunteer and bond with my friends in Key Club! As we start school, I want to wish you all good luck as we start learning, doing homework, and taking tests again. The start of the school is pretty exciting, however, because now we get to see all our friends every day again and we get to finally have Key Club meetings every week again! Hopefully each club is working hard to attract new members to Key Club. I am excited to see how much we can increase our membership as a division this year. Our division has several big events coming up in the next few months that we need to start preparing for now. RTC in September is the major learning event of the year for our division, and I encourage each club to try to send at least 4 members to this great event. We also have Fall Rally in November, and for this event we need to really make sure we dedicate ourselves to fundraising for PTP. Along with the pride in being able to buy Lt. Governors and District Officers at Fall Rally with that PTP money, we'll also have the great satisfaction in knowing that our efforts saved lives. Let's continue our year of service with strength, seals. This is just the beginning! Show the students at your school how amazing Key Club is so we can all serve our communities more effectively. Good luck as you do good. Sincerely, Connor Watts D35W Lt. Governor 2013-2014

Hey Seals! As you may already know, our August fundraiser is a coin drive for PTP! This fundraiser is also a competition between every club to see who can raise the most money! Even though this is a coin drive, dollar bills will still go into your schools' total amount. The last day to turn in your money will be September 30th. The winner of this competition will be announced at the October DCM! The club that raises the most money will get a surprise! Officers, if you want, you can decorate bottles or make boxes for your members to collect the coins. Try to keep the money in plastic bags when you turn them in so nothing will be lost! So collect all the loose change you can get and let's see which club and raise the most amount of money! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email them to me! I hope you're all ready for school!

Roll Call! D35W!

Glendora
Unfortunately, our summer vacation has ended and we are back in school again. However, that also means that we have another chance to get more members and embark on more Key Club experiences! But first let me explain what we did in this past month. Our club attended the regional picnic on the day of the July DCM and I am sure they had a blast. We also had a "Stuff the Bus" event at a Wal-Mart where we filled a school bus to the brim with supplies for students that aren't as lucky as us. The Glendora Key Club was in attendance at the Beach Cleanup last Saturday as well. I am going to ask the board if they think it is a good idea to do more things that involve helping people face to face as a possibility for future events. Have a great school year and see you at this month's DCM!!

Arcadia
During these meetiings (July and August Board Meetings) we discussed several upcoming events. These events included club day, Into the Blue, DCMs. etc. We were also able to bond which is crucial to having great teamwork! The 626 Night Market was held on August 3rd and August 4th from 3pm to 10pm at the Santa Anita Racetrack. Those who volunteered got a free t-shirt and a free admission. In this event, Key Clubbers helped set up, guard, clean up, etc. There were also able to enjoy the night market after their shifts. I hope everyone had a great summer! Summer is ending soon and school is going to start. NOOO! I hope to see everyone in the first meeting or during one of the upcoming events. Bye everyone! :)

El Monte
Heard about the 626 Night Market before? On Saturday, August 3rd, Key Clubbers from El Monte High School along with other schools from Division 35 West volunteered at the largest Asian night market in America. During the four and a half hours, volunteers assisted the vendors by unloading boxes filled with merchandise from trucks. Key Clubbers helped put up banners in addition to helping 626 Night Market make the Worlds Largest Cup of Boba Milk Tea. Key Club members set up the gaming booth by hanging up prizes. During their shift, volunteers were treated by vendors with food and drinks such as Hotato Potato and boba in a box as a way to say their thanks. Towards the end of the shift, each volunteer received a 626 Night Market t-shirt. Key Club members were able to witness all varieties of food, drink, music, and merchandise at one place.

Mountain View
Arf Arf! Lets wave through the summer heat of August with our volunteer work! On July 20th, our members got a chance to volunteer in the Run or Dye event at the Pomona Fairplex. They helped out with refreshments and got to throw dye at runners. It was such a colorful day! On August 3rd and the 4th, some of our club members helped out in the 626 Night Market located in Santa Anita Park. It was a lot of fun helping out!

Around the Division

On Saturday, August 10th, Key Club members from all over Region 13 gathered at the Santa Monica Beach for the annual Region Beach Clean-Up. Besides the D35W Seals, other divisions represented included D10 North, D10 South, D15, and D35 East. Like every other year, the Beach Clean-Up proved to be both a spirited and exciting event. Not only did we get to hang out at the beach, but throughout the service, cheers, icebreakers and sunburn, we were able to impact the community in a positive manner. The day started as we arrived at Los Altos High School while waiting for the bus to arrive. Arrival time was pretty early as we had a busy day ahead of us, but it was all worth making new friends along the way. After a calm and relaxing bus ride socializing and catching up on sleep, we arrived at the Santa Monica beach with ample time. Once there, members of D35W set up in a section of the beach and waited for other divisions to come. In the meanwhile, members passed the time relaxing, chatting, playing Frisbee, or even making sand ornaments. Once all of the divisions arrived, everyone gathered together into a big circle, where we familiarized with members from other divisions through several fun icebreakers. Some icebreakers involved untangling friends, throwing hula-hoops at people and making small-talk with a bunch of strangers (and soon-to-be friends). After the mass assembly, the service started as members from all divisions began searching the beach for trash. Nifty claw-like mechanisms were distributed, providing an interesting and unique experience. Picking up trash definitely is not as bad as it sounds. Once all of that was over, the day was ours to roam. That included hanging out at the beach, going swimming, checking out Santa Monica Pier, and just having a good time. The Region Beach Clean-Up was a great experience, and I hope that everyone can make it next year!

D35W Answers
This is a section where members can ask questions to the Division board! If you want to see a certain question, email them to me at d35w.cnhkc.ne@gmail.com The question this month is

How do you pick yourself back up when you're having a rough day/week?

Whenever I am having a tough time, I usually try to focus on other things to distract myself. Maybe I'll clean my room or practice playing cello just to get my mind off whatever is bothering me. I also like to take showers or listen to music to calm myself down. And if none of that ends up working, I will usually just take a nap and hopefully wake up happier in a few hours. -Connor

If I had a rough day/week I would talk to my friends about it because my friends always cheer me up. If that doesn't work then I'd try going out and surrounding myself with positive people and forget about what happened. -Vince

The last time I was having a really rough week, the small things really kept me going. Talking to family, friends, selling stuff on eBay or even watching NBA help me get cheerful again. Ultimately though, my family helps me think straight and makes me feel better. -Eric

Upcoming Events:
August DCM o August 24th at the Hacienda Heights YMCA o 1603 S Stimson Ave, Hacienda Heights, CA 91745 o 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM o Will also be a movie night! o Remember to bring $8 School! (if not already)

Closing Notes
Message from the Editor
Most of this newsletter has been about summer coming to an end and how lame it may be, but in retrospect it is also a new beginning. A chance to start fresh, and to create a totally new persona and attitude towards the future. Personally, I did not meet certain standards and goals this summer, but that is fine. Working towards the future is the most important step for me now, and realizing my goal, I plan to dedicate myself in the next few days. Sometimes, something as lame as the end of summer can be seen as a new opportunity with the start of school. A chance to realize prior goals, and to see them through. Not only a time of meeting with friends and studying, but a time of personal accomplishment, whatever that may be.
