TEACHING AID

1. TOPIC Manipulative/ Experimental in Teaching Mathematics by Using Finger Multiplication Method

2. TEACHING AID USED Finger Multiplication Method is used to do a simple multiplication. 3. DEFINITION OF TEACHING AID Multiplication by finger system is a mathematical learning method by using finger to do multiplication. In Indonesia, this method called Jaritmatika (Jari dan matematika/ finger and mathematics). It is a cheap and simple multiplication trick. The students need not to buy the tool because they can use their finger. 4. THE OBJECTIVE OF USING TEACHING AID The objectives of using finger multiplication in teaching mathematics are: To make students easier in studying about multiplication, To make students like mathematics, especially for multiplication. 5. SOME EXAMPLES 6 x 6 to 9 x 9 by using finger multiplication method 1) Put your open hands up

2) Mark your fingers with certain numbers start from 6 until 10

a. Your thumbs represent to 6 b. Your index fingers represent to 7 c. Your middle fingers represent to 8 d. Your ring fingers represent to 9 e. Your little fingers represent to 10 3) Your down fingers represent to tens, while your standing fingers represent to multiplicity unit. Your down finger and your standing finger will be added. For 7 x 9

1) On your left hand put down your fingers represent to 7

2) On your right hand, put down your fingers represents to 9

3) There are 6 fingers down, so you must multiply them by 10, because down fingers represent to tens.

4) There are 3 standing finger in your left hand and 1 standing finger in you right hand, so you must multiply it together

5) Adding together the sum of your down finger with the product of your standing finger.

Note: This method is just for multiplication 6, 7, 8, and 9. The multiplier of those numbers must be more than or equals to 6 and less than or equals to 10.

Multiplication of 8 There are two parts for multiplication of 8. Multiplication of 8 with multiplier from 1 to 5 Multiplication of 8 with multiplier from 6 to 10 Multiplication of 8 with multiplier from 1 to 5 Example: 8 x 1 1) Make your finger down that represents the multiplier 1 (left thumb) 2) After your down finger, make your next fingers down as much as the number of multiplier, for this case is 1 (your left index finger must down). 3) The left side of down finger represents to tens and the right side of down finger represents to unit. (for this case, there is no finger represent to tens and there are 8 standing fingers) 4) The left side of down finger is multiplied by 10 and added by the number of standing hand in the right side of down finger (For this case, 0 + 8 = 8). Thats the product. Multiplication of 8 with multiplier from 6 to 10 Example: 8 x 6 1) Make your finger down that represents the multiplier 6 (right little finger) 2) Before your down finger, make your previous fingers (just 1 finger), for this case is (your lleft little finger must down). 3) The left side of down finger represents to tens and the right side of down finger represents to unit. (for this case, there are 4 standing finger on the left side of down finger and there are 4 standing finger on the right side of your down finger) 4) The left side of down finger is multiplied by 10 and added by the number of standing hand in the right side of down finger (For this case, 40+4=44). 5) Adding the result with the last number (for this case 44+4=48).Thats the product. Multiplication of 9 (multiplier from 1 to 10)

1) Each of your fingers represent to one number. Like the picture above.

2) The down fingers represent to multiplier. 3) The left side of down finger represents to tens and the right side of down finger represents to unit. 4) The left side of down finger is multiplied by 10 and added by the number of standing hand in the right side of down finger. Thats the product. For example 9 x 2

6. CONCLUSION 1) We can use our hand to do some multiplication. 2) Multiplication by finger system is a mathematical learning method by using finger to do multiplication. In Indonesia, this method called Jaritmatika (Jari dan matematika/ finger and mathematics). 3) The objectives of using multiplication in teaching mathematics are make students easier in studying about multiplication and make students like mathematics, especially for multiplication. 7.
