Terms used in/during class


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Module- The curriculum being taught. Workstation- The furniture students sit at as they complete module activities. Sessions- A day at a workstation working on module activities. There are 7 Sessions in 1 module rotation. Orientation- A time in which students are trained how to function in the module setting. Orientation usually lasts 7 days. Personal Steps- A system developed to handle discipline problems. Each student receives 4 Personal Steps. Consequences for losing Personal Steps will be discussed during orientation. Module Guide- A pretest taken during Session #1 Module Library- Books located at each module site used for Reading Time Activities and researching answers to RCA questions. RCA's- Stands for Research Challenges & Applications. There will be 3 RCA's on Sessions 2,3,4, and 5. Four questions will be data interpretation from charts and graphs. Four questions will be researched using books from the module library. Enrichment Activities- Activities that students work on after they finish a session. Students must ask permission before starting enrichment activities. Extra credit points can be earned through the completion of selected Enrichment Activities. Module Activity Sheet- A sheet that each student will use to check off the activities they complete each session. This sheet is also used to check off on completed assessments. Assessment- A time in which students demonstrate to the instructor what they have learned. Each module will have 3 assessments worth 20 points each (60 pts. total). Log On- Information needed to Log On includes: A password - PIN number - Class Number and your name. Names must be entered exactly as they were entered into the network. For example, if the instructor entered the name Edward, the name Ed would not allow access to the server.

Industrial Technology Orientation

Introduction
This class has been designed to allow you to experience many of the technologies that affect your daily lives. The module workstations allow you to use technology to explore and learn technology. You will notice that the lab area is designed quite differently from other classrooms. We are very proud of our facility, and we want to keep it looking nice. You should consider this lab as your own and work daily to keep it looking good. WE ARE GIVING YOU OUR BEST, AND WE EXPECT YOUR BEST. One of the basic objectives of Industrial Technology is to allow you to experience as many areas of technology as possible. An important part of technology involves the APPLICATON of the skills you have developed in other classes. These skills include: reading, writing and math.

Working with Others

you should check carefully to see that all equipment is in place and that no damage has occurred. If you wait until the class has begun, you may be held responsible for any damage that is discovered. 3. If your partner is absent, Do not log them onto the network.

You will work with a module partner most of the time. It is important that you get along and work as a team. WE EXPECT THIS OF ALL STUDENTS! The ability to get along with different personalities is a very important skill you need to learn. If you are with a partner that interferes with your right to learn (hides things, won't follow the curriculum etc.) inform your teacher.

Procedures
Entering the Tech Lab:

Getting Help
1. If you need help turn on the call light at your module workstation. Continue to work on solving your problem while waiting for the instructor. 2. When the instructor arrives at your workstation, be ready to explain the procedure you just completed. Statements like, "I don't get it." or "This doesn't work." or "I did it just like said to." will not be accepted. 3. Do not leave your workstation to go help someone else. If you need to talk to a student in another workstation, turn on your call light and ask your instructor.

Classroom Rules
Your instructors believe that neatness is an important personal trait. We expect students to clean up their own mess. If students do not clean their area during the designated time, they will stay after class and clean.

8. Clean up any spilled glue, right away. 9. DISMISSAL - Clean up will be 2-3 minutes before the end of the hour. Be seated after cleaning the module site. Slide your chair in after the instructor dismisses you.

The Curriculum
The modules are 7 days long. Each day is called a session. The routines are the same for every session. Session 1- Module Guide (pretest) Reading Time (10 min) Take Pretest Module Activity Session 2- RCA's 1-2-3 (10 min) Module Activity Session 3- RCA's 4-5-6 (10 min) Module Activity Session 4- RCA's 7-8-9 (10 min) Module Activity Session 5- RCA's 10-1112 (10 min) Module Activity Session 6- Test Review (10 min) (Study for the Post Test) Module Activity Session 7- Post Test/Reading Time Take the Post Test Module Activity All points totaled. Clean up module area. Turn in Module Activity Sheet. Projects taken home or collected for testing.

Storage
1. Use the storage caddy to store your portfolio folder. Student portfolios never leave the room. 2. Large projects are stored in the cabinets. 3. Make sure glue bottles are closed and are placed in the plastic box located in the storage drawer.

1. Check your shoes for mud before entering the Tech Lab. Remove muddy shoes and carry them to your module site. 2. Do not bring magnets into the Tech Lab. Magnets can damage computers and computer disks. 3. Don't pull to hard on the earpiece of the headphones. The earpiece can fall off. 4. Don't wear the headphones upside down. 5. Keep microphones in the mic stands. 6. Don't turn the computer off at the end of the hour. Make sure you have exited the programs, logged off and awarded your attendance points (10) and participation points (10). 7. Use your IPad calculators.

Assessments (60 points)


Three times during each module you will have an assessment. An assessment requires you and your partner to answer 4 questions and/or demonstrate a skill you have learned. Try to complete the assessment the session they are scheduled. If you do not complete the assessment on your designated session, it should be done at the beginning of the next session. Points will be recorded on the Module Activity Sheet. Be prepared for assessments - write down the answers on a piece of paper while waiting for your instructor.

Look up the answers. Sometimes your module partners may say they know the answer. Look them up anyway. Trust but verify. Use all the books at your module location. Many times when students complain that they cant find an answer, it's because they didn't use all the resources. Use the calculators for math problems. Books may be required to look up math formulas. Use the glossary, table of contents and/or index to find the page number where key terms can be found. Use scanning techniques to search for key terms within the readings.

Research, Challenges, & Applications RCAs


Each module will contain 12 Research Questions you must answer. There will be 3 questions on session 2-5. One question will be a math problem, one question will be data interpretation, and one question will need to be researched using the module library. Each question is worth 10 points if you answer it correctly on the 1st try. If you answer correctly on the 2nd try you will be awarded 5 points. Industrial Technology Orientation

Research Challenges and Applications (RCA) Cheat Sheet


Look up all answers using the module library books. Look in the index, glossary and table of contents for key terms that will lead you to answers. Use ALL the module library books. Use scanning techniques to quickly find answers. Be willing to devote 10 minutes to RCA's. Use a calculator for math challenges. Use the Mathematical Dictionary

Math Concepts Needed for Research


Pythagorean Theorem The theorem that the sum of the lengths of the sides of a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. Also called the 3-4-5 method of squaring a corner. The formula is a+b=c. If a=4, b=3, then c=5. The math would look like this: a (16) + b (9) = c (25). Take the square root () of 25 to find c.

Fractions vs. Decimal Decimals and fractions are generally interchangeable (1.5 = 3/2) Percentages - 9% of 453=? Use your calculator - type in 453 then press the X key, then type 9, then press the % key press the = key. Approximation & Estimation - If the information in the math RCA's are approximations your answer may be an approximation. Notation - Miles per day may be written as miles/hour or 7 x 6 or 7 x 6 3 3

Module Workstation
The module workstation has been especially designed for you to learn efficiently and with out bothering other people. A list of the items at each module workstation includes. 1. A computer- used to deliver the curriculum and access software applications. 2. A call light - used to tell the instructor you need help on a problem. Do not turn call lights on and off rapidly. 3. A module library 4. 2 headphones 5. Module Equipment used to complete assignments. 6. 2 roller chairs Rules for Roller Chairs Don't sit in chair and roll to another location. Don't stand in the chair Don't sit on the back of the chair. Keep all 4 rollers in contact with the floor at all times. Keep the chair fabric clean. Wipe up spilled glue, color marker, etc. immediately.

Post-Test
On day 7, you will take your post-test. The computer will prompt you who will take the test first. Students are REQUIRED to read a book from the module library/AR book while waiting their turn to take the post-test. Sit in the classroom area to read while your partner is taking the post test. The pre-test (session #1) and the posttest (session #7) are the only activities you do without your partner.

Industrial Technology Code of Cooperation


Both students work on RCA's and module activities. Divide the use of equipment evenly. Use RESPECTFUL speech. Hand your partner tools, materials, books, etc., don't throw them. If you understand a lesson and your partner doesn't explain it to them. Help your partner with skill development. Keep your cool when frustrated. Don't have an "I told you so" attitude.

If you ask for help on a math question, be prepared to explain to the instructor the procedures you have already attempted. _______________________ Inventory all items in workstation at the beginning of the class.

Your Behavior
Your attitude and behavior are very important. You, and only you, are responsible for your behavior. The instructor will determine acceptable behavior on a fair and impartial basis to ensure the best possible learning environment for all students. Students are expected to follow lab policies to maintain a positive and businesslike learning environment. You will be given four Personal Steps on your Student Records sheet. They give you permission to participate in the modules. You will keep your Student Records sheet in the front of your portfolio at all times. If you choose to ignore school rules or classroom policies at any time, your instructor may take away a Personal Step. A good thing to remember is this--if you are doing something when an instructor is not looking and would not do the same if he or she were looking, then that action is probably inappropriate behavior.

Personal Steps Consequences


1. Documented in portfolio, initialed, loss of 5 participation points. 2. Documented in portfolio, initialed, loss of 10 participation points, removed from module the remainder of the period, one demerit. 3. Documented in portfolio, initialed, loss of 20 participation points, removed from the module for two days, two demerits, write a report on module topic-minimum of two-hundred works, sent to office. 4. Broadcasting Limitations
Students will be held accountable for the content of the radio programs. You are not allowed to make fun of fellow classmates, teachers, or your school, All new stories, commercials, and dialog must be appropriate for school.

Tardy Steps
Punctuality is an important personal characteristic. The instructors will begin taking roll after the bell rings. If you have an excused tardy slip from another instructor or from the main office, you will be allowed to participate in the day's activities. If you don't have a tardy slip, you will be given a tardy notice.
