INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SPACE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

FORMAT FOR PREPARING THE INTERNSHIP PROJECT REPORT The whole write-up should center on the specific objectives and the major findings of the project works. Instead of giving a general, topic-like title, be specific to-the-point and emphasize the explicit nature of the course. The total number of pages of the work report should be 30. 1. ARRANGING THE CONTENTS: The sequence in which the project report material should be arranged and bound should be as follows: Cover Page & Title Page Bonafide Certificate from the concerned project guide counter signed by the Group Head/ Head of the Department 1.3. Abstract 1.4. Table of Contents 1.5. List of Tables 1.6. Figures 1.7. List of Symbols, Abbreviations and Nomenclature 1.8. Chapters 1.9. Appendices 1.10. References 2. PAGE DIMENSION AND BINDING SPECIFICATIONS: The dimension of the project report should be in A4 size. The project report should be neatly bound. The cover should be printed in black letters and the text for printing should be identical. Report should be soft bound with black cloth to bind with black text over white thick chart paper (as given before Appendix 1). 3. TYPING INSTRUCTIONS The impression on the typed copies should be black in colour. One and a half spacing should be used for typing the text, and shall be typed in the Font style Times New Roman and Font size 12 unless otherwise stated explicitly. 1.1. 1.2.

4. PREPARATION FORMAT: 4.1 Cover Page & Title Page A specimen copy of the Cover page & Title page of the project report are given in Appendix 1. 4.2 Bonafide Certificate The Bonafide Certificate shall be in double line spacing Times New Roman using Font Style and Font Size 14, as per the format in Appendix 2. The certificate shall carry the supervisors signature countersigned by the Group head of the concerned division. 4.3 Abstract Abstract should be straight to the point; not too descriptive but fully informative. First paragraph should state what was accomplished with regard to the objectives. The abstract does not have to be an entire summary of the project, but rather a concise summary of the scope and results of the project. It should inform a reader whether to read or not the full text, and also give a precise idea on what has been attempted during the course. By its nature, an abstract should be short, and limited to 1 page. (Font Style: Times New Roman and Font Size: 12, Spacing: Single) 4.4 Table of Contents The table of contents should list all material following it as well as any material which precedes it. The title page and Bonafide Certificate may not be included in the Table of Contents, but the page numbers of which are in lower case Roman letters. The format of the table of contents is given in Appendix 3. 4.5 List of Symbols, Abbreviations and Nomenclature Standard symbols, abbreviations etc. should be used. 4.6 List of Figures - should have title, chronologically indexed and appropriately referred in the running matter. 4.7 List of Tables - should have title, chronologically indexed and appropriately referred in the running matter. 4.8 Chapters The chapters may be broadly divided into 5 parts as follows. The main text will be divided into several chapters and each chapter as follows and each chapter may further be divided into several divisions and sub-divisions. Each chapter should be given an appropriate title. Tables and figures in a chapter should be placed in the immediate vicinity of the reference where they are cited. The chapters should be arranged in the following manner. a) Introduction/Background Introduction/ Background usually describes the background of the internship project with brief information on general knowledge of the subject. This includes brief description about the ISRO center, and the division they have been assigned to, the current activities of the division, the area of their work, and a short description of the nature of their work. Details of previous works and known facts should suitably be

referenced. (For example, It has already been reported [1] OR Jiang et al [2] reported that. OR It is known [3] that. etc., where [1], [2], [3], should be detailed in the reference section as per the format given below) b) Aim and Objectives This gives a precise idea on what to be achieved in the work and a brief plan for achieving that. c) Description of the works (Experimental/Computational/Theoretical) This section should give the idea about various tools the students have used for carrying out their works. This can be prepared with the help of schematics, block diagrams, flow charts in case of algorithms, specific details of the experimental set-ups, etc. For analytical works, detailed description of the theory may be included in this part. They are also required to describe about various softwares which they have used in simulation works. Bulky details should be presented in Appendices. d) Results and Discussion This section includes the specific details of data they have generated in graphical and/or tabular form. Gross plotting may be advantageous to analyze the obtained data. Based on the analysis, major findings should be pointed out unambiguously. It should be noted that the findings are to be summarized according to the significance to the stated objectives, and should complement the later. Bulky details and repetitive tasks should be presented in Appendices. e) Conclusions and Recommendations Conclusions are to be drawn with reference to the previously stated objectives of the project. Conclusions should be supported by specific data and results. This should high light the major results and the implication of the works and its relevance in the ongoing activities of the center. Recommendations are often more important than conclusions. It is known to us how to do better only after we finish a project, i.e. after we obtain an appropriate experience. Particularly, students experiments are hampered due to lack of experience, time, methods and equipment as well as insufficient attention to accuracy and details. The students should hence make clear how the work has improved their analytical/experimental ability and the additional amount of knowledge they have gained on space systems apart from the regular course work. Recommendations should be given for any further changes or work that would better accomplish the project objectives. 4.9. Appendices Appendices may be provided to give supplementary information, which is included in the main text may serve as a distraction and cloud the central theme.

4.10. List of References The listing of references should be typed below the heading REFERENCES in the order in which they appear in the work. A typical illustrative list is given below.
