MULTIPLE ORGAN DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME an altered organ function in an acutely ill patient that requires medical intervention to support

continued organ function

1. BLEEDING AND ACCIDENTS

2. POISONING

3. STAB AND GUNSHOT WOUNDS

4. ANIMAL BITES

5. DROWNING

1. AIRWAY 1.1. assess, establish, and maintain an adequate airway 1.2. administer artificial resuscitation if necessary 1.3. observe for chest trauma such as open sucking wounds or flail chest 1.4. administer oxygen at 5 lpm unless client has history of COPD

2. HEMORRHAGE AND SHOCK 2.1. deep wounds with pulsating blood flow a. apply firm pressure over the wound b. if wound is on a limb, elevate extremity c. apply pressure with 3 fingers over appropriate pressure point d. once bleeding is controlled, apply a pressure dressing e. tourniquets should be used only when all other methods have failed 2.2. venous bleeding: apply direct pressure to bleeding site 2.3. never remove foreign object, just immobilize object 2.4. assess for and treat shock 2.5. administer tetanus booster as ordered

3. NEUROLOGIC INJURIES 3.1. inspect face, scalp, head, and neck for abrasions, hematomas, and lacerations 3.2. gently palpate head for any injures 3.3. inspect the nose and ears for leakage of CSF 3.4. assess level of consciousness 3.5. evaluate PERRLA 3.6. observe for signs of increased ICP

4. ABDOMINAL INJURIES 4.1. keep client NPO 4.2. assist with insertion of gastric tube 4.3. inspect abdomen for injuries 4.4. auscultate bowel sounds 4.5. do not palpate the abdomen 4.6. prepare client for peritoneal lavage if indicated 4.7. insert foley catheter

5. MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES 5.1. observe for signs of fracture: pain, swelling, tenderness, ecchymosis, crepitation, loss of function, exposed bone fragments 5.2. cover open fracture with sterile dressing 5.3. immobilize any suspected fractures by splinting the joint above and below the injury 5.4. perform neurovascular check of area distal to the fracture: assess for color, temperature, capillary refill, sensation,
