IntheaftermathofWorldWarII,rapidurbanization inSoutheastAsialedtoincreasedtransmissionand hyperendemicity.Thefirstmajorepidemicsofthe severeandfatalformofdisease,dengue hemorrhagicfever(DHF),occurredinSoutheastAsia asadirectresultofthischangingecology.

E PIDEMIOLOGY

The incidence of dengue has increased 30fold over the last 50 years. Up p to 50100 million infections are now estimated to occur annually in over 100 endemic countries, putting almost half of the worlds population at risk. The SouthEast Asia and Western Pacific regions are the most seriously affected.
