Im thirsty.

Child: Saleh Date: September 2013 Written by: Eunjoo Kia ora/As-salamu alaykum Saleh and whnau, Spring is around the corner and now the children have more time to play outside. Today, I found that Saleh, you were really having a great time outside. As usual, you rode a black bike, ran around the playground and played in the sand pit- no wonder you were thirsty. I saw you go to the water fountain next to the shade. The fountain is a bit higher than you so I was curious as to what you were going to do. Surprisingly, you went to get the red container which was stacked up next to the shade. You put it on the ground and stood there. You seemed to know how to drink water exactly. You pressed the long button with your hand and drank water. I found that some of the children have difficulties

using the water fountain but you were an expert today. You must have observed the other children using the fountain. How clever you are! Ka pai. Whats happening here? Saleh, Im really happy to see you have become more comfortable here at An-Nur and that you feel at ease and are able to explore your environment. I can see that you enjoy exploring the environment here, and find your own way to play and try to things out. This links to Te Whariki, Exploration Goal 1 which states that children develop the knowledge that trying things out, exploration, and curiosity are important and valued ways of learning. Additionally, I believe that your actions for thirst show us that you have knowledge on how to keep yourself healthy. You certainly have a sense of self-help and self-care skills for drinking. Ka Pai ( Well-being, Goal 1). Tino pai! Whats next for Salehs learning step? Saleh, our teachers will continue to foster and strengthen your sense of wellbeing and exploration at the centre. We will continue to provide opportunities for you to extend your own learning by using many props and asking open-end questions. Child/Parents/Whnau Voice
