DHOOPA Scientific Classification

The Dhoopa tree belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae and its botanical name is Vateria indica L. (Synonym Veteria malabarica)

Kannada Name: Damar Sanskrit Name: Sarjarasa, Devadhupa, Maricapatra, Ajakarna English Name: White damar, Malabar tallow, Piney warnish Hindi Name: Badasal

Natural Vegetation
It is large evergreen tree upto 15 to 20 meters. Abundant in lower and middle ghats of South West India.

Oil Seeds
Flowering season: May to June Fruiting: July to September Seed details: The fruits are pale brown in color tri-valved, oblongated to 6 x 3 cm containg highly moistured single kernel.

Experimental Investigation:
The oil was extracted from kernel using Soxhlet extraction procedure. Seeds of various sizes were collected and weighed. In this case also yield of the oil was very less around 20% and analysis of the oil showed that this oil get solidifies in room temperature only which clearly defines that this oil is not suitable for Biodiesel production.
