Se7ens Opening Titles Analysis

By Molly Murnaghan

I think that the genre of Se7en from the opening credits is thriller/horror. I think this because the font looks like scribbled writing and moves sharp and creates a unnerving atmosphere to the viewer. The fast moving stop and start editing between the action and the credits, conveys the atmosphere the director is trying to show to the audience the sinister atmosphere. The speeded up actions for example a man is writing and suddenly it becomes mirrored for three seconds, and I feel this adds to the eery theme. I also feel that it makes the audience intrigued to what the man is writing. The mise en scene tense music which I feel heightens the atmosphere. The music also contains high pitched noises which is irregular. A mystery of the opening titles is you dont know who the person is because you only see his hands. There is a large use of props showing to the audience that it is a large budget film. The first screen grab is showing the scribbled writing to introduce the actors in the film and as well the title, I feel this shows the audience that this is a horror/thriller film, which sets the atmosphere. The second screen grab is showing the speeded up actions, this is when he is writing and it becomes mirrored in to two hands. I think that this really shows the use of effects on the opening scene. The final screen grab shows the disturbing nature in the opening titles of the film. I think because I think the photograph looks like a young boy with something mechanical stuck in his head as a form of torture. Also his face is scrubbed off the photograph, which could suggest the cruel nature within the person.
