Indication: Maintenance therapy of reversible airway obstruction due to COPD,
common colds
Drug classification: anticholinergics, bronchodilators
Mechanism of action: blocks the action of acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in
bronchial smooth muscle causing bronchodilation
Dosage: Adult: 2puffs qid, Adult and children > 12yr 1 vial every 6-8 hr, Child 2-12yr
3drops/kg/dose q6-8 hrs
Special precaution: patients with bladder neck obstruction, prostatic hypertrophy,
urinary retention, geriatric patients, pregnancy, lactation children <5 yrs old
Pregnancy risk category: B
Adverse reaction: CNS: dizziness, headache, nervousness GI: GI irritation nausea
Derm: rash CV: hypotension, palpitations Others: allergic reactions, blurred
vision, sore throat, epistaxis, nasal irritation
Contraindicated to: Hypersensitivity to ipatropium, atropine, belladonna alkaloids,
bromide or flurocarbons, peanut or soy allergy, avoid use during acute
bronchospasm
Form: Aerosol inhaler, inhalation solution, nasal spray
Nursing responsibilities:
 Monitor HR, PR, RR
 Caution to those with heart problems and overactive thyroid
 Assess allergy to atrophine and belladonna alkaloids
