The Clinic by Jeff Gremmels Strategies and Structures 1What is Gremmels purpose in writing about this particular experience? How do you know? Gremmels message, I believe, is experience is better and more memorable than a classroom and lectures. I know this because of his last sentence: Years of lectures, labs, and research could not match the education I received in five days with this single boy. 3Make a list of the main clues in this case. How does Gremmels reveal them to the reader, and how do these clues advance the narrative? thin, pale, and young -age (14) -knees to chest -silent -refuses to follow instructions for physical exam -bruising umlaut marks -mother dominates conversation -stomachaches and not eating Gremmels reveals the main clues of this case I chronological order, how he views them. These clues advance the narrative by letting us see how even though he had years of experience and was focused on finding out why he needed to go beyond his training.

Dog by Richard Russo Reading Closely 1Why does Henry want a dog? Henry wants a dog for comfort, entertainment, and possibly to have something joyful for him and his parents. 2How and why does young Henry earn the nickname Mr. In and Out? How appropriate is the name? Henry earns the nickname Mr. In and Out by always going somewhere in or out of some doorway. I believe his name is appropriate given the evidence.

3What plan does Henry set into motion in paragraph 7? How well does it work? Henry sets the plan to get a dog through persistence into motion I in paragraph 7. This plan works great but he leaves some loopholes. 4Henry relents from his plan and tries hard not to slam the screen door. What does this change of heart show the reader about his character and personality? What can we make of his final screen door slam? The change of heart show the reader his character and personality are a turning point and a metaphor for this story. The final breath of the new dog and possibly his parents marriage.
