Dear Chairman Obey and Ranking Member Lewis:

I am requesting funding for Brooklyn Youth Initiatives in fiscal year 2010. The entity to
receive funding for this project is the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) located at 30
Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217. The funding will help secure two community-
oriented after-school programs- Arts & Justice (formally Courtroom Drama/Drawing on
Justice) and the Dance Africa Education Program- with special focus on developing
creative- and critical-thinking skills in at-risk youth and combating teenage delinquency
through collaborations with Red Hook Youth Court, the Urban Assembly for Law and
Justice, and the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. BAM is the largest
performing arts center in Brooklyn, and one of the borough's leading cultural institutions.
I certify that neither I nor my spouse has any financial interest in this project.

Sincerely,

Edolphus "Ed" Towns
