Students will practice listening skills before focusing on errors made in the writing section at task one. This will help build the foundations for further task one development and practice. SS then look at medical IELTS vocab before dealing with diagram reading questions.

Materials/Aids

Common error focus

T writes sentence parts from IELTS writing task 1 and SS have to figure out the mistakes. They rewrite correctly. Next, SS take time to rephrase the sentence parts in as many different ways as possible. 15

Language for different task 1 tasks Gap completion of Task 1

SS write the six different task one types on their papers and then write phrases, grammar and vocab which can be used for each. Review this on the board after eliciting answers from the SS. 15

SS practice the above via a gap completion task. 15

Noun into adj

SS learn how to change some nouns into adj as preparation for similar activities required in task 1. 10

Diagram focus

SS focus on the diagram and discuss what can be seen. SS then think about how to divide up the diagram and what words they can rephrase. Following this they follow a carefully prescripted procedure for the task to write a task one essay for the diagram. 20 Discuss diagram essay. 5 Break 20

Vcabulary development plus grammar for

SS make a list of the top five things doctors need to do their job and help people. They then give reasons for their ideas to the class orally.

Following this they match pictures to words related to medical equipment before further medical vocab work, all related to IELTS. This then forms the basis for adverbial focus and SS will use the vocab to talk about doctors. 35

Dealing with unknown words

SS read a small text and try to guess the words in italic from context. 10

Table completion Diagram focus

SS read a text and complete a table from its content. 10 T instructs SS how to deal with diagram type reading questions before allowing them to read and complete the provided diagram. 35

Self study and EDC work

Students use the remaining time to do their self study and EDC work T provides assistance and support.
