American Revolution Project

Purpose: Students will be analyzing and researching why colonists resisted British policies before and after 1775. They will also have an opportunity to focus on important battles, people and/or other events of the American Revolution. Students should also be able to discuss how these battles, people and/or events had an impact on the final outcome of the Revolutionary war. Directions Part 1: The first part consists of writing a research paper on a major event, battle or person in the American Revolution. 1. Begin by choosing one of the major events, battles or people listed on the last page of this assignment description. 2. After researching your topic, outline your research paper. You should have at least a half-page outline of how you plan to write you paper. 3. Write a two-page research paper on the computer that describes your topic. You must include the following in your research paper in order to receive full credit: a. If you have chosen a battle please answer the following questions in your research paper: i. What is the name of your chosen battle? ii. Where and when did the battle take place? iii. Who are the major figures in the battle? iv. What side is each figure fighting for? v. Were there any important battle strategies used and/or developed that would be notable in your research paper? If so, what are they? vi. What was the final outcome of the battle? vii. Was this battle a significant one in determining the outcome of the war? Please explain your answer. b. If you have chosen to write about a person please answer the following questions in your research paper: i. Who is the person that you have chosen to research? ii. When and where was this person born? iii. What are some of the important accomplishments of this person? iv. How is this person important to the American Revolution? v. What side of the war did they favor and why?

vi. Were there any particular events or actions of this person that are notable and relevant or the Revolution? These should be mentioned in your research paper. vii. What happens to this person after the American Revolution is over? c. If you have chosen to write about a particular event: i. What event have you chosen to research? ii. What are the specific details of this event? Explain these details in chronological order. Make sure to include the setting and important people. iii. What was this events impact on the American Revolution? Do not forget to include (points will be deducted if you forget to include the following): Specific people, dates, and locations when writing the research paper The impact this event had on the American Revolution, either before or after the Revolution ended. Works cited page o Keep track of all of the sources where you find your research. Half of your sources should be primary; the other half should be secondary. We will go over this during our Crash Course Research Paper Day, but please ask me if you have further questions. FYI: Wikipedia may not be listed as one of your sources. You may use that to start and find resources about your chosen topic, but you should not rely on it for information. Directions for Part 2: The second part of the project consists of making a poster or a model of your chosen topic. 1. If you choose to do a poster then you must include the following things in order to receive full credit: a. Title of your poster b. Minimum of five different pictures that have to do with your topic c. Each picture must include a minimum of a one sentence label below it

d. The poster must also include a summary of at least one paragraph describing your chosen topic. This should not be typed but hand written and clearly legible and should be placed somewhere on the front of the poster. 2. If you choose to do a clay model, shoe box, model or battle re-creation then you must include the following things to receive full credit: a. The model must represent the topic that you have chosen for your paper and should be easily identifiable and associated with your topic in some way. b. The material that you use should be appropriate for school and also sturdy enough to withhold being moved around. c. It should be easily identifiable and associated with your topic in some way. d. There are no other specifications listed however, you must check with me first and get my approval for what you plan to do before you bring it to school.

Time in class to complete these assignments (you should expect to spend a significant amount of time outside of class on this project): You will be given two days during class to research your topic on Chromebooks. You will also be given one day in class to work on writing a draft of your paper You will be given one day in class to work on a poster/clay model/etc. Due dates: Turning in any of these project components after its due date will result in your grade going down by one full grade for every day that its late (note these dates were revised on October 16, 2013). I will not accept projects after the fifth day from the due date. Extra credit: If you would like to present your project to the class you may get the chance to earn 10 bonus points towards your project grade. The presentation must be no longer than 5 minutes but no shorter than 3. You are not allowed to read your research paper to the class. This means that your presentation should show to me and the class that you are knowledgeable in your subject area.

This project counts is worth 100 points of your second quarter grade.
