There have been regular
media reminders of the 2002 Bali
bombings that killed 202 people.
The Australian toll was 88; three
Kiwis died. Then there was the
2004 bombing of the Australian
Embassy in Jakarta that killed nine
and injured 150.
Other sad, bad histories
continue to grate in Australia,
including the killing by Indonesian
troops of five journalists working
for Australian TV at Balibo in East
Timor. That was in 1975, but a new
film has revived the story. In fact,
one of the men, camera operator
Gary Cunningham, was a Kiwi, but
that's often overlooked.
Understandably, the rest of
the world tends to bundle Australia
and New Zealand together. Both
countries were “discovered” by
English navigator James Cook in
the 18th century and soon settled
by the British.
Today they share a
common heritage. Their flags are
confusingly almost identical. They
have a similar outlook on many
things but not towards Indonesia.
Australia has set up a
taskforce to help Indonesia deal
with the Jakarta bombings. But NZ
Foreign Affairs Minister Murray
McCully said his country was not
going to be part of the response.
He said the reason was Australia
had a closer relationship with
Indonesia than NZ.
However, two NZ police
liaison officers in Jakarta are
reportedly helping the Indonesian
police and NZ has followed
Australia and put out a travel
warning against visiting Indonesia.
Australians are acutely
conscious of Indonesia and sadly,
a large number, according to many
surveys, still harbor suspicion
towards their over-populated
northern neighbor. The fearful
know that any attack on Australia
would have to pass through the
Indonesian archipelago, even if it
didn't originate there.

There's no such paranoia in
NZ, where an armed threat to the
South Pacific country would first
have to seize and occupy 7.7 million
square kilometers of Australia,
much of it being desert.
Having such a huge barrier
between NZ and Asia helps most
Kiwis take a benign view of
Indonesia.
More than 50,000
Indonesian-born people live in
Australia, but only 4,000 in NZ.
Indonesians in NZ are frequently
confused with Filipinos, and at
street level, there is widespread
ignorance of the nation with the
largest number of Muslims in the
world.
Bahasa Indonesia is widely
taught in Australia, but not in NZ.
Although Kiwis are great
overseas travellers, they usually
overfly South East Asia on their way
to Europe.
Australians have long seen
Bali as their backyard holiday home,
while Kiwis prefer the Pacific
Islands.
Overall, the response to the
bombings in NZ has been sober
and balanced. There has been
much condemnation of terrorism,
but no hatred directed to Indonesia
and its people, despite fanatics
killing a Kiwi who only wanted to
help Indonesians.

exemplifying the trend for Aussie
big-hitters to pull up stumps and
head home.
A recent HSBC survey
found Australians working
overseas are among the highest
paid in the world, with 20 per cent
earning more than $US250,000
($320,000) a year -- but about a
third are considering a move back
home.
Just before the global
economic crisis took its toll on
London's stockmarket and
financial hub, Forbes -- better
known as the husband of Darcey
Bussell, former principal dancer
of the Royal Ballet in London --
and Burns returned to live a much
quieter life in Sydney's eastern
suburbs.
Forbes, an Adelaide boy,
had worked for 20 years in
London as a merchant banker.
Burns, from Brisbane,
thought that at 38 the time was
right for him and his public
relations wife Joanne to start a
family.
In Britain, the pair had co-
managed a fund at GLG,
Europe's largest hedge fund,
alongside financial whiz kid Greg
Coffey, who turned up his nose at
$US250 million to stay on at the
firm for a further five years.
"Coffey is a very intelligent,
very driven and a very successful
fund manager, but he did not
socialise -- after work he always
went home. He was a family guy,"
Burns recalls.
While in London, Forbes

was becoming increasingly
concerned about the
environment, sustainability and
carbon emissions.
For six months before
returning home, he worked for
Prince Charles' rainforest project
to promote awareness of the
damaging effects of
deforestation and to encourage
nations to stop burning down
vast areas of valuable rainforest.
"Angus was becoming
very passionate about the
environment," Burns says. "He
was reading a lot and reminding
me about carbon footprint, so I
became hooked.
"There is no global
government and unless
everyone recognises the
problem and does his or her bit
about climate change, the planet
will be destroyed.
"Angus used to say, 'Life
must have more meaning than
making money for yourself and
your clients. Let's form a green
global equity fund -- a funds
management business to invest
in 25 stocks which have been
specifically picked for (their)
robust and sustainable
management commitment to
lighten their carbon footprint'."
And so, after returning to
Australia and kicking up their
heels for several months, they
decided to get back to what they
are good at -- funds
management, but with a
difference.
Their green fund, Natural
Capital Funds Management, has
already attracted $10m -- mostly
money solicited from family and
friends, including cash from both
Burns and Forbes. "A good
chunk of our money is in the
fund," Burns says.
The fund will invest in 25
stocks around the world, using
research from British firm

company's impact on the
environment and what remedial
work is being done by
management to lessen its carbon
footprint.
"We are very keen on
Mastercard, a fantastic business
with a phenomenal brand," Burns
says. "With the shift from
cash/cheques to e-payment, there
is less paper money and less
impact on the environment."
The green fund has so far
only obtained a wholesale licence.
It will be launched next month,
targeting pension funds and
wealthy, sophisticated investors.
The minimum investment is
$500,000. The fund will charge
management fees of 1.28 per cent
and a performance fee of 10.25
per cent on any positive
performance after fees and
expenses, according to its investor
presentation.
Burns says the idea is to
make investors wealthy, but with
minimal impact on the
environment.
"In a small way, we are
trying to do our bit to save the
planet and at the same time give
us a purpose and encourage
investment in the right way.”

Hawthorn supporter dies after 5m fall at MCG

A HAWTHORN

stairwell at the MCG on
Saturday has died in hospital.
Efforts to save the 27-
year-old man, who suffered a
severe head injury when he fell
down a stairwell after Saturday's
MCG Geelong-Hawthorn clash,
were hampered by a beer-
drinking patron who pushed
through the crowd to watch
emergency workers.

spokesman said the incident

closest to the Olympic Stand.

Horror surgeon banned for life from medical practise
A SURGEON being sued
for allegedly performing botched
gynaecological operations on
women in WA hospitals has been
banned from practising medicine.
The obstetrician and
gynaecologist, who has now left
the country, has been
permanently stripped of his right

The Sunday Times can
now reveal the first details of
what is potentially the most
serious medical scandal in the
state's history after a blanket
suppression order was partially
lifted on Monday following legal
action by this newspaper and the
Medical Board.

The doctor is facing civil
court claims that could result in
large compensation payouts for
the State Government.
One woman interviewed
by The Sunday Times said she
was ``angered and disgusted at
the outcome'' and the doctor had
left her ``feeling and thinking I'm
not normal''.
While knowing of the
investigation against him, the
doctor attempted to cover up the
allegations while trying to obtain
work overseas. He lied in an
interview and produced fake
documents of his good standing
in WA.
The judge who banned
the doctor ruled his behaviour as
``disgraceful or dishonourable''
conduct for a member of the
medical profession.
The scandal was so
serious former attorney-general
and health minister Jim McGinty
thought public exposure so
important he personally
intervened and challenged the
suppression in late 2007. He lost

the application.
The Medical Board lawyers
have been fighting to suspend the
doctor since November 2005 and
have filed 14 complaints against
him in the State Administrative
Tribunal.
The Sunday Times, which
understands all potentially affected
WA patients have been contacted
by health officials, has been
investigating the scandal for more
than a year, fighting to bring the
case to the public's attention.
The doctor is also being
sued by five former patients in the
District Court, seeking personal-
injury damages for medical
negligence. More civil actions will
follow in coming months.
One woman claims in a writ
that surgery performed by the
doctor ``constituted trespass as it
was performed in the absence of
the plaintiff's consent to do so''.
Another alleged victim and
her husband filed a writ over a
botched sterilisation in which the
doctor failed to apply a fishie clip
to her right fallopian tube and
resulted in her becoming pregnant
and having a child.
The doctor at the centre of
the scandal is now believed to be
in South Africa, having fled
halfway through the tribunal and
court proceedings. He hasn't
worked in WA since June 2006.
Tribunal president John
Chaney ordered the doctor's
permanent work ban in March this
year and in a judgment found he
deceived South African health
officials while trying to work at a
hospital near Durban.
The Sunday Times has not
been able to report on the ban
until now.
Most of the allegations
have been kept secret for more
than three years because the
doctor's lawyer has argued he was
suicidal and publicity would
worsen his depression.
In the past year an
international contingent of

psychiatrists, including an Oxford
University professor of old-age
psychiatry, have been called to
assess the mental health of the
surgeon. All found he had
depression, but the experts varied in
their opinions of the severity of his
illness.
On Monday, the Medical
Board asked for his name to be
made public, arguing that while they
did not believe the doctor was lying
about his symptoms, he was ``using
psychiatrists in a manipulative way''
and some reports should be treated
``with caution''.
But the doctor's lawyer,
Martin Bennett, said his depression
had not improved and publication
would lead to a deterioration of his
condition including a stay in hospital.
``If you are going to bet on this -- it is
a very unfortunate thing to bet on
someone's life,'' Mr Bennett said.
Judge Chaney allowed his
judgment to be made public but he
ordered the continued suppression
of the doctor's identity and all details
of the 13 unresolved tribunal cases,
including patient names
Mediation is listed for later
this year but one alleged victim said
she was ``angered'' that she has
been gagged from talking about her
case and the length of time taken in
hearing her complaints.
Health Minister Kim Hames
declined to comment.
The Sunday Times has
lodged an appeal in the WA
Supreme Court seeking to overturn
the remaining suppression orders

Melbourne man admits terrorism charges
A Melbourne man has pleaded
guilty to being a member of a
terrorist organisation and to being
involved in preparing for a terrorist
act.
The retrial of 32-year-old Shane
Kent was due to start in the
Victorian Supreme Court today,
but before it could begin Kent
pleaded guilty to the two charges
which stem from a police
investigation going back five
years.
Kent's offences were part of a
plan to carry out a terrorist attack
on a major Melbourne landmark.
Today he pleaded guilty to
knowingly being a member of a
terrorist organisation between
July 2004 and November 2005.
The indictment says the terrorist
group was preparing an attack
involving weapons or bombs.
He also admitted guilt on one
count of making a document
connected with preparation for a
terrorist act and being reckless
about that connection. That
charge relates to a video he
helped make.
A third charge to do with

dropped.
Kent is by no means unfamiliar
