Access/Review Prior Knowledge Students will sit in a circle on the floor fill a beach pail with sand and mix in some plastic alphabet letters. Put the pail with sand on a beach towel. Let each child take a turn pulling out a letter from the sand. Ask them to hand the letter to you. see if the class knows the name of the letter. Once all of the letters are pulled from the sand we will put them in alphabetical order and then sing our ABCS. This will help us review our abcs and what order they are in along with setting us up for the new lesson and our book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

Topic presentation Before reading I will use the Alphabet poster that will be taped up to the board. Go over the letters A-L and teach them the saying of uppercase letter and its buddy letter or lowercase letter. Use the white board to write the letters A-L and show them the differences in the uppercase and lowercase letters. Then start reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to them to introduce the uppercase and lowercase letters. I will ask questions to them about the book stopping at certain pages to show the distinction of the uppercase and lowercase letters. - No page numbers so stop at the page with the entire alphabet ask the question can anyone point out an uppercase letter to me? - Page when all the letters fall off the tree: Can 3 students point out lower case letters? - Who is Ds buddy letter on the page that starts next from the pile upbreath ?

Cut apart the pieces to the tree and glue them on big white sheets of paper. Baggies will be provided for them that has pre-cut uppercase and lowercase letters A-L . The students will be able to match up the letters anyway they want on the tree but it will represent the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree. The upper case letter must go with lower case letter. Closure Today we learned how to tell the difference between an uppercase letter and a lowercase letter. We focused on letters A-L and tomorrow we will focus on letters M-Z! Can anybody tell me what we call the lowercase letter that looks like the uppercase letter? Are there any similarities between uppercase and lowercase letters? Hand them pre-made uppercase and lowercase review books Have them put in their book bags to do for homework and bring back the next day to add letters M-Z. Bring in a coconut for them to try since we will have focused so much on the coconut tree theme from the story.
