Solving Multi-Step Equations

The following PowerPoint presentation was adapted from McDougal Littells Algebra 1, 2004.

Common Core Standard

Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers).

Answer this! Why are the order of operations important in solving linear equations?

Tips to Solving Multi-Step Equations

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Write the original equation. Combine like terms. Isolate the variable Get rid of fractions. Simplify.

Solving a Linear Equation Example: 1/3x + 6 = -8

a. 1/3x + 6 = -8 b. 1/3x + 6 -6 = -8 -6 c. 1/3x = -14 d. 3(1/3x) = 3(-14) e. x = -42 a. Write original equation b. Subtract 6 from each side c. Simplify d. Multiply each side by 3 e. Simplify

Write the original equation. Combine like terms. Isolate the variable Get rid of fractions. Simplify

Combining Like Terms Example: 7x - 3x 8 = 24

a. 7x - 3x 8 = 24 b. 4x 8 = 24 c. 4x 8 + 8 = 24 + 8 d. 4x = 32 e. 4x/4 = 32/4 f. x = 8 a. Write original equation. b. Combine like terms. c. Add 8 to each side. d. Simplify. e. Divide each side by 4. f. Simplify. Write the original equation. Combine like terms. Isolate the variable Get rid of fractions. Simplify

Using the Distributive Property Example: 5x + 3(x + 4) = 28

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. 5x + 3(x + 4) = 28 5x + 3x + 12 = 28 8x + 12 = 28 8x + 12 12 = 28 12 8x = 16 8x/8 = 16/8 x=2 Answer this! How was the solution x = 2 found? Explain each step.

Distributing a Negative Example: 4x 3(x 2) = 21

a. b. c. d. 4x 3(x 2) = 21 4x 3x 6 = 21 x + 6 = 21 x = 15

Multiplying by a Reciprocal First Example: 66 = -6/5(x + 3)

a. b. c. d. 66 = -6/5(x + 3) (-5/6)(66) = (-5/6)(-6/5)(x + 3) -55 = x + 3 -58 = x a. b. c. d. Write original equation. Multiply by reciprocal of -6/5. Simplify. Subtract 3 from each side.

Answer this! What if the student decided to distribute the term, (-6/5) instead of multiplying by the reciprocal?
