INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE PAST


Our Individual & Collective Pasts are what makes up history. Physical objects, personal momentos, family heirlooms, all make up a part of our individual past. They can also be a part of our Collective past, family history can be recorded through momentos and family trees. The history of a family, community, province, and country are all a part of our collective past.

DEVELOPING YOUR HISTORY SKILLS: THE HISTORICAL METHOD

Historians investigate and interpret the past by using the historical method of research. There are 4 stages to the historical method of research:

Pose a good historical question. Collect reliable information. Organize and Evaluate information. Interpret information and present conclusions. You must know the historical method and the order of the stages!

SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Information can be collected from a variety of sources. Libraries, Archives, Museums, the Internet, and a variety of other places. There are 2 types of sources - Primary Sources, & Secondary Sources.

TYPES OF SOURCES

There are several types of sources of information. A Primary Source is a rst hand account made at the time than an event occurred. A Secondary Source is an interpretation of an event based upon primary sources.
