STRUCTURE OF MATTER UNIT PLAN

WEEK 2: DAY 1-3

Grouping of the Elements Standard Set 3. Structure of Matter f. Students know how to use the periodic table as a tool to identify elements in simple compounds. Objective: Students will understand that elements in the periodic table are arranged in vertical columns known as groups. They will be able to identify groups in the periodic table according to their chemical properties. Materials: Computer Printer Paper Print out of Periodic Table Colored pencils Resources: Video: The Periodic Table: Crash Course Chemistry #4: http://youtu.be/0RRVV4Diomg Day 1: Step 1: Pass out Periodic Table to each student Step 2: As a class, students will watch a video from my website titled The Periodic Table: Crash Course Chemistry #4. Depending on time whole video can be watched or started at 5:03. (Entire video length: 11:22)

Step #: While watching the video, students will label and color code their Periodic Table according to the groups talked about in the video: Alkali Metals: green Alkaline Earth Metals: yellow Transition Metals: blue Halogens: orange Metals, Metalloids, Gases, Non-Metals: grey Lanthanides: purple Actinides: light purple Noble Gases: red

Day 2:
Students will work in eight groups of four. Each group will be assigned one of the groups on the periodic table written above. Each person in the group will be responsible for:

1) Research on the internet and/or in textbook and notes their assigned elemental group. 2) Create a googledoc and make sure to set setting to share and anyone who has a link can comment 3) Each person in the group is to type 3 factual statements about their elemental group into a googledoc and put their name next to their fact. All statements should be original and not repeat. 4) As a group create one paragraph with your findings.

5) Using the paragraph your group has created that describes your elemental group create a wordle.

a) copy your paragraph and paste it into wordle at http://www.wordle.net/ Paste a screen shot of wordle into your google doc and share with instructor. b) print a copy of your wordle for each group member. Put your name on it and turn into instructor.

Day 3: Students will finish up their wordles for the first 15 minutes of class and then each group will present their element group to the class. 5 minutes each. Students are responsible for writing points about each periodic group on their element chart and in their science journal.
