Birds are part of our lives, easy to observe, all very different. Without having to take the students outside, these 3 lessons will give the students more knowledge about birds. Also, sharing some recent research on birds will give the subject importance. Because I am using the same PowerPoint, it brings the material together, tie-in the 3 lessons.

LS1 All living organisms have identifiable structures and characteristics that allow for survival (organisms, populations, & species). 11:1.1 Describe how organisms are classified into a hierarchy of groups and subgroups, which are based on similarities that reflect their evolutionary relationships.

Lesson 1: Needed material: computers, projector, screen, speakers, my cloth statues of birds, CD of bird songs, PPT slide show of birds, handout

Objective: What birds can the students identify by sight or song. Format & Questions: I ask the students, do they know a bird in their back yard, then I ask the students to search on the internet for their favorite bird. Then I will play these birds songs, birds selected by the students, so everyone can start to learn the differences. At the same time have a picture of each bird up on the screen. How are these calls/songs used by the birds? Then quiz them to see if they remember any of the birds either by sight or song. Lesson 2: Needed material: computer, projector, screen, PPT slide show showing male & female bird of the same species, handout

Objective: Format & Questions: Do male birds look different than female birds, why? Discuss about the relationship of humans & birds. Discuss the appreciation of birds.

Show the students the current research, talk about noise caused by humans does it affect the birds. Lesson 3 Needed material: computer, migration chart, handout, PPT slide show of birds

Objective: How do birds move around, do all birds stay year round, what habitat is important. Format & Questions: Do we see different birds outside in the winter than in the summer? Where do they go, what is this called? Discuss the maps on the PPT. Are forests needed for the migration, why? Are bird species endangered, or are new species of birds being discovered?
