On the night of October 16, 1859, John Brown and 21 of his men attacked Harpers Ferr ! "he sei#ed the armor and se$era% other ke points within the town! &hen citi#ens and %oca% mi%itia attacked, Brown's (arm of %iberation) was forced to take ref*ge in the armor 's fire engine ho*se! "he took se$era% hostages with them! +resident B*chanan sent ,o%! -obert .! /ee to %ead a gro*p of 0arines in capt*ring Brown and his raiders! On October 18, /ee's men stormed the fire ho*se, ending the raid within se$era% min*tes! Brown was tried for m*rder, treason against the ,ommonwea%th of 1irginia, and conspiring with s%a$es to create an ins*rrection!
