    Archaeopteryx lived around 150 million years ago in what is now southern Germany during the Late Jurassic period when Europe was an archipelago of islands in a shallow tropical sea near the equator. It was about the size of a raven and had broad wings and feathers, but also shared traits with small theropod dinosaurs like claws and teeth. While it could fly or glide, Archaeopteryx was more closely related to dinosaurs than modern birds. Later discoveries of feathered dinosaurs in China provided stronger evidence that birds evolved from feathered maniraptoran theropod dinosaurs.
