Digital Unit Plan Unit Title: Solving Linear Equations Content Area: Mathematics Algebra 1

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 7. Solve linear equations in one variable. a. Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, ininitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x = a, a = a, or a = b results (where a and b are different numbers). b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms Big Ideas: Solving one-step equations with one variable Solving two-step equations with one variable Solving multi-step equations with one variable Learn the equation to find out whether an equation has one, two, or zero solutions

Name: Angelina Nguyen Grade Level: 8

Unit Goals and Objectives: 1. 2. 3. Students learn the correct order of operations Students learn how to find how many solutions an equations has (discriminate) Students know how to solve multi-step equations with two variables

Unit Summary: In this unit, students will learn the order of operations, the discriminate, placement of terms in an equation, and be able to solve multi-step equations with two variables. This unit is broken up into three lessons. In the first lesson, students will learn the order of operations. In the second lesson, students will learn how to find the discriminate. In the third lesson, students will learn how to solve one-step linear equations with one variable and multi-step equations with one variable. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Visual Ranking Steps to solving a linear equation Formative: Entry/Exit tickets Order of operations Entry/Exit tickets Discriminate Quiz Order of operations Quiz Solving one-step linear equations Summative: Lesson Exam Solving multi-step linear equations Presentation Group presentation of order of operations, finding the discriminate, and solving multi-step linear equations

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Students learn the correct order of operations Acceptable Evidence: Students can recall and recite the order of operations. Students are able to perform the order of operations on equations Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities: Present students with the order of operations and why it is needed. Begin to present the concept with acronyms such as PEMDAS or the U-method. Present students with one-step equations. Worksheets.

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Students learn how to find how many solutions an equations has Acceptable Evidence: Students are able to recall and apply the discriminate with multi-step equations
Lesson Activities: Present students with the discriminate from the quadratic formula. Review placement of terms in the equation. Review importance of term placement. Present students with equations with one solution, two solutions and no solutions.

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Students know how to solve multi-step equations with one variable Acceptable Evidence: Students are able to solve multi-step equations with one variable
Lesson Activities: Review the order of operations and finding the discriminate. Present and utilize information from Lesson 1 and 2 to solve multi-step equations.
