CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

In this chapter the writer will present about the background of the study, problems of the study, objectives of the study, and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background of The Study Language is a medium that used by the members of society to communicate each other. Society itself is a group of people who need language to be able to communicate one of each others. According to Wardhaugh (2006, p. 1), society is any group of people who are drawn together for a certain purpose or purposes. From this statement it can be assumed that human beings use a language to communicate with others and reveal their purpose or feeling in a speech community. So that both language and society have the important roles in our life. As the existence of the society, indeed, the use of language has been a consideration to communicate among the members. One of the elements of language usually used in a community is register. It is one of the complicating factors in any study of language varieties. Register is the use of language in a certain group who create their own characteristic. Wardaugh (2006, p. 52) states register is the sets of language items that is associated with discrete occupational or social groups. As Ferguson (1994, p.20) says, people participating in recurrent communication situations tend to develop similar vocabularies, similar features of intonation, and characteristic bits of syntax and phonology that they use in these situation, this kind of variety is a register. It is often used routines in communication in a certain group that make register becomes strong as the way of people to communicate. Moreover, in social

term, register helps to create a certain characteristic the group of people to express their identity among who see themselves. In this case, the writer focuses on the register which is used by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. It is because in this group of girls often use the register in communication, and also it is easy to do research in the boarding house because it is a common area of students who lived in boarding house which most students lived there. In doing this analysis, the writer will find out the meaning of registers and the purposes of use them. So, it can be easier to be understood that can avoid misunderstanding which happen in the environment. 1.2 Problems of The Study This research is conducted in order to find the answer of problems of the research as the follows: 1. What registers are used by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7? 2. What are the meanings and the purposes of using the register by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7?

1.3 Objectives of The Study Based on the problems of the study above, it can be stated that the objectives of this research are as follows: 1. To find out the registers that is used by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7.

2. To find out the meaning and the purpose of using registers by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7.

1.4 The Definition of Key terms The key terms in this study are defined: 1) Sociolinguistics : A study of language use within or among groups of speakers.

( Wardaugh, 2006, p.219 ) 2) Register : The sets of language items that is associated with discrete

occupational or social groups. ( Wardaugh, 2006, p. 52 )

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter the writer presents the related theories concerning the list of topics which are discussed and the previous studies about this topic.

2.1 Theoretical Framework 2.1.1 Sociolinguistics Sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationship between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and how languages function in communication (Wardhaugh, 1986, p.12). Therefore, sociolinguistics studies the relationship between language and society, the function of language in the society in different social contexts. It can be assumed that sociolinguistics does not discuss a structure of a language, but it focuses on how a language is used. So, it is clear now that the role of sociolinguistics is to manage a language as its functions in society, or in other words sociolinguistics deals with a language as means of communication. 2.1.2 Speech Community Wardhaugh (2006, p.122) explains that speech community is any human aggregate characterized by regular and frequent interaction by means of a shared body of verbal signs and set off from similar aggregates by significant differences in language usage. Most groups of any permanence, be they small bands bounded by face to face contact, modern nations divisible into smaller subregions, or even occupational associations or neighborhood gangs, may be treated as speech communities, provided

they show linguistic peculiarities that warrant special study. It can be concluded that speech community is a group of people who do interaction with the same language in the same area which use the particular norms among their small groups. 2.1.3 Language Variations

Wardhaugh (cited in Risna, 2012) says: The meaning of language variation is that in reality the language we used in everyday living is remarkably is varied. Variety is a specific set of linguistics items or human speech pattern (presumably sounds, words, grammatical features, etc) which we can uniquely associate with some external factors (presumably, a geographical area or socio group). It can be assumed that language variation is a language which used by human being in everyday life that with many varieties. This variety makes a unique language for the group of people who use it. There are many kinds of language varieties, such as: dialect, accents, slang, pidgins, creoles, jargon and register. 2.1.4 Register In sociolingistics, register is the use of language in a certain group who create their own characteristic. According to Wardaugh, (2006, p. 52), register is the sets of language items that is associated with discrete occupational or social groups. Based on those definitions, the writer concludes that register is a special language used by a group of people in a certain area that has a function toward them. One of functions of register is it helps a certain group to express their identity at a specific time or place. So, it is a way of a group of people seeks to present theirselves to others.

2.2 Previous Study The writer uses the previous study by Risna (2012) entitled A Study on Register Used by Oryza FM Radio Community at The University of Brawijaya . The simila rity is based on the object of the study which analysis register. While the differences are the writer analyzes the registers, its meanings and the purposes of using it among the girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7, whereas the previous writer analyzed the registers and its meanings which were used Oryza FM radio community at the University of Brawijaya. She used the descriptive qualitative study as the research design by interviewing the members of Oryza FM radio at University of Brawijaya. She chose them because she thought that the meaning of register used by Oryza FM radio might be different from the other radio station.

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODES This chapter presents many points related to research method. They are type of research, data sources, data collection, and data analysis. 2.1 Research design This study applied qualitative approach since the data collected were in the form of words. According to Ary et al (2002, p.425), qualitative research deals with the data that are in the form of words, rather than number and statistics. The writer used a descriptive qualitative approach because this research described about register and its meanings used by the girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. 3.2 Data sources The data is taken from the interview among the girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. This study is intended to find out an analysis of registers and also the meaning of them which are used among the girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. 3.3 Data collection In collecting data, the writer did several steps as follows: a) The writer read some sociolinguistic text books which contains of register. b) The writer prepared the questions which relevant to register used by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7.

c) The writer did an interview to dig up some information. This interview was intended to get information especially about registers that used and the purpose of the using them by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. d) The writer took a note of registers that was usually used by girls in boarding house block A at Sunan Ampel number 7. e) The writer selected and listed the registers.

3.4 Data analysis After collecting the data, the writer analyzed data by answering the two researches of the problem. The processes of data analysis are as follows: a) Reading and understanding the result of interview. b) Analyzing the meaning of the registers and the purpose of using them in communication. c) Making a conclusion as the result of analysis and the findings.
