    The tsunami caused by the 2004 indian ocean earthquake generated widespread damage Resulted in 200 deaths at kalpakkam out of which 67 were women only from this pudupattinam village. Well known for atomic power pants - MADRAS ATOMIC POWER STATION (MAPS) and INDIRA GANDHI CENTRE FOR ATOMIC RESEARCH (IGCAR). Its also known for the construction of the WILHELM HAMM CENTRE OF HOPE (WHCOH) initiated by the hope foundation.
