This is our first annual 5K walk/run, and were hoping it will be successful so we can do one every year, said Coordinator Athena M. Curley. Ms. Curley explained the foundation is named for her mother, Glory M. Rufa, who passed
away unexpectedly from heart disease in 2011. The Glory in our Hearts Foundation is dedicated to Glory Rufa and her mission of enriching the communities of Northern New York now and for generations to follow by providing financial assistance to children in pursuit of educational and spiritual endeavors, raising awareness of heart disease and continuing Glory M. Rufas charitable work, Ms. Curley said, reciting the foundations mission statement. Registration for the walk/run will begin at 8 a.m. with pre-registration available online at http://gloryinourhearts.weebly.com/5k.html. The walk/run will begin and end at the picnic pavilion on Barnhart Island, and T-shirts are guaranteed to those who pre-register. Ms. Curley said the event will be held rain or shine, with several door prizes that were donated by area businesses to be awarded and entertainment provided by Chase The Light Productions. Ms. Curley said it is their goal to have at least 75 entrants and so far the event is shaping up to be a success. As of right now, we have approximately 60 people registered, she said. In addition to T-shirts, Ms. Curley said the foundation will also be distributing bracelets in memory of Ms. Rufa with the words Wife, Mom, Sister, Aunt & Friend on them. She was a very special person, Ms. Curley said. She lived her life to help others and her actions were visible in her daily life. Ms. Rufa graduated from Massena Central School in 1976 and was employed as a breavement counselor by Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, as well as a tenant relations assistant at the Massena Housing Authority, and in 1996 she was named the Woman of the Year by the Massena Business and Professional Women Club. This past summer the foundation distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to a number of children residing in family housing at the housing authority. Ms. Curley has also said the foundation would like to award a scholarship in memory of Ms. Rufa to a graduating senior who will be studying for a career in the human services profession.
